My B&G Macaw bit my Nanday Conure
Due to my carelessness, my macaw bit my conure today. I was reaching into my macaw's cage to give him water and I forgot that my conure was on my shoulder. My Nanday hopped off of my shoulder onto the macaw's cage and the macaw was right there. The macaw bit my conure's foot and it began to bleed. I put peroxide on it to clean it and the powder you use to stop bleeding of their nails when they are clipped. It worked and stopped the bleeding. My Nanday is acting fine. He is eating, playing, talking, etc. I hope this means he is okay. I would have taken hime to our vet, but they do not do emergencies after hours. Should I do anything else for my Nanday if he seems okay? Thanks.

Some people "claim" cayenne pepper will stop bleeding and reduce the likelihood of infection - but a IMO a better method to use corn starch to stench bleeding... Again - this is just my preferred method - not necessarily the *best* method. What you did was the best you could (and - given my knowledge up until about a month ago) would have been what I would do. I would still take your Nanday to the vet for a quick assessment no matter what... But, again, that is just my idea... |

Just checking to see how Oscar is doing, not too long ago Merlin our Harliquin Macaw climbed up Max's cage (our Sun Conure) and before I could get Merlin off the cage Max was protecting his "territory" (Now I have two birds thinking they are the boss and chasing each other around the cage, one in and one outside) well Merlin bit the bottom of his foot. Max's foot didnt even bleed but Max was favoring it and not using it. This happened on a Sat. nite and our vet does do emg hours, but his price also reflects it. I watched his behavior Sunday and inspected his feet constantly I started to notice a change in color between the injured foot and the other, so took him to his vet first thing Monday AM..
I am glad I did, it was worth the $200.00 or $300.00 by the time all was said and done (HECK, THAT IS ALMOST THE PRICE OF A NEW MAX... LOL... I AM JOKING, I couldnt replace my Max!!!!!!!!!!!) Or replace any of them for that matter!! I have heard such horror stories about birds biting off there feet due to untreated injuries that when I saw the color differance, he had to go to the vet, no question about it. Well hope Oscar is doing good, give us an update.
