Local PetCo making progress!

We have been visiting a sun conure named Francis at a local PetCo for months. He is a very sweet bird, very hungry for attention, loves to be scritched between the cage bars, etc. He was in a bird room with lots of cockatiels, budgies, finches, and canaries and a GCC named Lola that would bite if you came too close. Francis is the bird I wanted to get but he was $600, so I adopted Moki instead. Francis was actually adopted and then returned because he was too loud for apartment living. We went back today after a long break. All the birds are gone except a dozen or so budgies, and they had a nice new display cage. I asked the manager about Francis, and he said Francis was finally adopted after a year!! He also said they will no longer sell any birds except budgies from now on, it was too sad to see Francis there so long, and people are not buying the bigger birds because of the economy. He himself had two suns. I feel really good about that store making that decision.

That's good! I'm hoping to buy a cockatoo someday, I hope stores don't get rid of them for good, however, but I'm glad your pet store made the right choice!

I think it's much better to buy directly from breeders or even rescue a bird. :) Petstore birds are so sad. Especially the "higher" birds that have the capacity to think deeply about things and bond with people.

Yes, I suppose you're right...I would just really like a cockatoo. Breeder birds are usually good, if the breeder knows what they're doing ;) as for rescuing a bird, that would be good too. I agree about the birds in the petstore being sad, just sitting in a cage all day, seeing all the people it could share a home with, but rarely being interacted with...
