Hello. Have aquired a green cheek conure today

He arrived in our household today..i adopted him . Have been thinking about having a bird for a year now and we are ready. He already though has been through 3-4 homes in a 6 mnth period..and hes about 6-8 months old ive been told. His return to a store (on numerous occassions) was due to the fact he is a biter. As it is his first day here in our home and we are getting him settled.. (if im asking in the wrong place btw..please direct me!) in the meantime i am trying to get information on how best to start handling him (considering his "past") in order to not do any training damage or make him worse.! i have the right amount of time and willpower!

thankou!

Welcome!! Good luck with your problem child - lots of us will try our best to help.

Mainly the trick of not being bitten is to not get bit... That is - if it is likely to be bitten, don't put your hand, neck, face, lip, arm and so on, in danger... For starters use a piece of dowling to do step-up training and removal from the cage...

Try the following two articles and then post things that you notice are different or cannot do.

Parrot Biting
How Not to be a Tease

And post your results!

Oh - and try the conure forum on this board, http://www.birdboard.com/forum/conures/ , for the green cheek centric type people...

I would suggest first making friends with the bird, and not being in a hurry to handle him. Hand-feeding a favorite treat often works very well in changing the bird's idea about how desirable you are to have around. First through the cage bars, then through the open door, never making a move to grab the bird or pick it up. A few weeks or a month or so of this treatment will make any future handling/training that much easier!

Barbara Heidenreich has a great training video that might give you some ideas on how to work through this. Just a thought. Good Bird Inc - Books & DVD's
