Iguana's and Birds?

Is it not a wise idea to have an iguana if you have birds? I have someone who needs to rehome and iggy and I don't want to say yes and put my macaws, greys and Toos in danger.

Iguanas are vegetarians however they have been known to try meat. As long as the birds are in a safe place they should be fine, wash your hands between handling each one. Iguanas tend to stay to themselves and sunbath alot. I dont think you need to worry especially if your birds are bigger than conures. Just dont let them near each other.

I think the biggest concern would be if the iguana carries salmonella which could be harmful to the birds.

Salmonella

Yep, I read about the salmonella and I don't think I want to chance it.

Salmonella can be carried in reptiles, but they have to be exposed to it. They don't just come with it. If this iguana has been a pet his whole life, then chances are good (unless he was fed raw meat) that he does not have it. If you are concerned, you can have him tested for carrying it from your vet as well.

Salmonella in pet reptiles is much over-hyped.

I had an iguana for ten years when I lived with my parents growing up. I made sure I kept him clean and washed my hands after handling him. Salmonella was never an issue with two dogs, two cats, a TAG and a 'tiel when I had him.

I have both parrots and reptiles, and have done so for the past six years. As long as you wash your hands between handling them, and keep them in other parts of your home (to be on the safe side if one or the other escaped) then you should be fine.

As long as basic cleanliness guidelines are followed there is NO problem having both!!!! I wouldn't hold one on my lap while having the other on my shoulder LOL or put them in the same cage but as long as you wash your hands in between handling there is no problem. Yes they can carry salmonella but in all the iguanas we have rehomed/housed we have only had three test positive. We have actually had MANY more aquatic turtles that carried salmonella (and we have had much less of them in!)
