I know she ment well and I'm very grateful that she actually took care of him for me but at the same time pissed that she didn't do what I told her, feels like she did the exact opposite of everything I told her to do.
I have two brothers aged 19 and 20 that live with her and they were home while she went to the summerhouse. I wished she left him with the 19 year old since he is very much like me when it comes to animals. He has a lot of fish since that's the only animal my dad allows in the house.
I have a friend who used to have a bird when she was little and she's going to watch him the next time we go away and she's very excited about it. I threw a party a few weeks back and she and Pixel hit it off right away. Sadly she wasn't available for this trip.
I know I could also get the guy I bought him from to watch him, officially they don't do that for people any more but I'm over there all the time buying stuff and looking at all the pretty birdies and harrasing the guy for info and news on a new hatch. He knows my name by now so I think I'm save there.

I honestly think she meant well by driving him all over Iceland, quite frankly.
Well, she didn't actually drive him all over Iceland. That was what I was doing ;) The summerhouse is only a 45 minute drive from our house

Sorry, that was a pathetic attempt at humor. I was being silly.

Poor Pixel. Your mum meant well, but from my experience this is how most pet sitting jobs go. He must be very happy to have you back. :)

Last year I went to Sri Lanka and Singapore for 3 weeks and left my lorikeet to be looked after with my parents (I live with them so they know him the best). I was disappointed though to find out they rarely fed him any fruit or veges the entire time, just his lorikeet mix. -__-

Now when I need a bird sitter for my aviaries and companions, I make sure they are either proffesional pet sitters or *good* bird owners themselves. I type out -exactly-, dummies style, what needs to be done as well as go through it with them. I tell them to ring me right away if *anything* happens, otherwise I just stress the entire holiday.

Too many horror stories from anything less. When I have friends, neighbours, etc, look after the birds, they leave the aviary doors open for birds to fly away, fail to even do the food or water, leave dead birds on the bottom of the aviary for me to find. Once my quails eggs hatched while my friend was looking after them and I thought that anyone with common sense would have seen that they were too small to reach the water bowl and would have given them a shallow dish. Or at least contacted me about it. But no... she left the starved babies dead in the aviary for me to find. :(

So anyone who gets pissed off or stress from leaving their birds in other people's care, I can relate and be pissed off with you. :P

I left my budgie with my parents when I went to uni because we wernt allowed pets on campus - she didn't last 3 months with them... She died of lonliness and pining for me cos they didnt give her any attention...

I have to go away for a month in January - and am paying $600 for bird boarding school rather than trust Jasper to my parents care lol.. Non-bird people just don't understand how to care for birds properly - isn't just food and water.. but its also love!

Ditto to that! My parents watch our birds when we're gone and do an A+ job. But a couple of years ago, another family member was the one to watch my sun conure when I went someplace with my parents.

AHHH! I came back and it was a behavioral problem nightmare. And it took MONTHS to fix his hurt feelings. He refused to come out to me, he'd run, bite, hide, etc. He was so P.O.'d.

She did great with food, water, and keeping him clean. But he hadn't been out of his cage in a week. Like another poster said, their dogs and cats get the royal treatment, but our birds and just "birds"...I can't stand that! Next time the three of us are gone together and my fiance is gone as well...we're driving 2 hours to the bird-boarding services!!!!!!!

My mother killed my budgie, Lucky, one summer when I was younger when I was visiting my dad because she didn't listen to me when I told her to give him fresh food and seed DAILY. She just saw millet husks in his dish and he starved to death. :(
