Question Refrigerate seeds & treats packages?

Hi My Bird Peeps!

I've been reading posts about storing foods in air tight containers and while reading I realized that not once has anybody mentioned storing these foods in the fridge.... ie: seeds, organic seed diet, seed treats, packaged treats...
pretty much everything but the pellets (not sure why I picked those to not be refrigerated)

We've been keeping all of Stella's foods in the fridge because I thought it would keep them fresher longer... If they shouldn't be in there, perhaps its hightime we found out! His treats take up a whole shelf so if they don't need to be there..... or even worse, if I'm doing the wrong thing.. please tell me! and don't worry, I always make sure when he gets his seeds & treats, they are never cold...

Its officially 5 months this week we've had Stella! We can't remember what life was like without him!

Thanks as always!

Marilyn

OK, this is almost complicated.....

I buy fresh and freeze it (a months worth), from there it goes to Tupperware in the fridge (a weeks worth), and from there it goes to smaller Tupperware in their food drawer (a few days worth). That includes their seed, their pellets and their nutirberries.

The soak seed I buy enough for six months and freeze half, the other half is kept in the cupboard.

Yes, keeping food in the refrigerator will keep it fresher longer than at room temp. Freezer works even better for storing.

I actually store my pellets in the fridge, and seeds in the freezer it apparently keep them fresh longer and prevents moths.

I store everything in the freezer, nuts, treats, bags of food, millet etc., and i only put a small tupperwares worth in the fridge for weekly use. I've never had a problem with moths this way. My parents have a breeder pair of Major Michell Too's and kept all the food in containers in the bird room, and had to throw it all out due to lots of moths- they started freezing and storing stuff in the fridge and never had a problem. The seeds smell fresher out of the fridge i think lol :)

Since birds eat bugs, would eating the bugs be extra protien?

I dislike weavels as well. They are rife here in Auckland. You could try putting your fresh sealed seed bag inside another larger zip lock bag.
I know this works for my porridge oats. I think the idea is that the moth lays eggs still, but the maggots/carapillars hatch outside of the outter bag and die before they can reach your seeds in the inner bag! Lack of food.
But I would add this does not stop Weavels if they are already in the seed! Old Stock.
I always break open any seed I buy, as I have seen a lot of old dry seed on the market.
Fresh is best, as any mold in the old seed will not disapper in the fridge or Freezer.

Lisege: The maggots would be good protin, but it's the feces of the maggots and the molds that then start the decay of the seed and case. I would worry about.
