Second bird options!

Hello
Right now I am basically owned by a Parrotlet.
She is my first bird, and my only bird.
I am moving in about a year, so I am waiting to get my second bird.

What I'm planning on doing is getting my P'let a mate.
Now, I know I will 'loose' my little p'let but thats something I'm okay with.
I can still see her, and I know she would be happy.
And it may not work out, theres always that huge chance, which I can live with.. I would get them seprate cages, and that would be my second bird.
And I LOVE P'lets, so just a new addition would be perfect for me

But I want to start researching birds, because I would like a bigger bird.
Now, I've read about Conures and everything of course.
I would have a year to research, get toys, food and get a baby.

I would just really love to know peoples opinions on birds.
What birds are the best for a situation like this?

Not just conures, but all birds.
Please let me know, and ahead of the time...thanks!

So your question is ????? Are you going to get another P'let? Or, do you want a larger bird? We who don't know you can't answer what is the best bird for you. What are you looking for? Cuddly? Smart? Talkative? Quiet? Playful? A companion for your Parrotlet?

I have a P'let as a third bird in my flock, given to me by an owner who didn't have time for him anymore. He can't relate to any of the other birds except the Budgie because of the size difference and the danger involved. I had to move him to a different room because he would land on the Amazon's cage, and she bit his toe so that it bled quite a bit. He didn't learn to stay off the cage, so he can't be in the same room (he's flighted).

He's now paired with a male Budgie, and they are getting along fine. It took about two weeks for the P'let to accept the Budgie. During quarantine, I tamed the Budgie, so they are both tame and flighted, and fly to me for millet treats and to hang out. There's no guarantee that would work for you. I have a Mexican P'let and they are more laid back than the Pacifics. I don't know if a Pacific would get along with a Budgie. Two male P'lets sometimes make good pals.

I would like a larger bird.
I was saying if my P'let didn't like the new mate, I would keep the other P'let and just get them diffrent cages.

I would like affection, playful, I honestly don't care for noise level.
Oh well my birds won't be flighted at first

Just in my opinion I would never put a large bird in with a small bird, it is asking for trouble. As for conures I have a Sun that I love to death, but he is defentialy not as loving as some other birds, he is very playful though. He is always on the go and always into something so he will make you laugh. I woudn't recommend putting a Sun in with anything, unless your breeding, because they tend to be moody and sometimes Rocky needs his space and I would be afraid he would hurt another bird. Noise is an issue with Suns, they are very very loud!!! An Rocky can be very demanding as well, just this morning while I was trying to get his veggies cut up and get him ready to go as far as food for the day and he wanted to play in my kitchen sink so bad he was screaming at the top of his lungs to get in that water! I finally had to give in to him and let him play, he almost made me late for work!! In general from what I hear from other Sun owners theres are demanding also so that might be something to consider. Good luck with your search.

If you are only thinking of getting a second p'let to free you up for more time with a bigger bird, I would think again. A second p'let who doesn't get along with the one you have will take even more time because it will also need attention from you and you will need to run interference because sometimes they will want to be together the can't be trusted together, or one will bully the other, etc.

It is hard to handle more than one bird that is very needy and hands on. Your p'let is used to having all of your attention, much like an only child. I have a few birds now, and I know I do better when I look for birds that are more independent and can amuse themselves somewhat. I could not manage more than one very needy bird and meet it's needs, they would get jealous of each other and all the fun would go out of sharing my life with birds. So maybe you want to consider a bird that will not compete for constant attention. Conures are very needy, as are macaws and cockatoo's, I think Eckie's might be that way, not sure, but if you do your research you may be able to keep your special bond with your p'let and have a larger bird with a different type of relationship, equally as satisfying.
