Question Can you microchip birds?

Just wanted to know if you can microchip birds? When we got Rocky he was banded, but we took the band off, because is was bothering his leg making it raw and he would always pick at it. If something ever happens(we pray nothing does) I would like someother way to be able to identify him? Is microchipping possible??

I would avoid removing your bird's leg band if at all possible. It may create problems if you ever decide to move out of state.

I had to take mine off my macaw as well, but I also saved it!

Avian vets and some breeders will do it. A friend told me how to do it myself but I'm a bit of a chicken. I lost the web site to buy the supplies when my computer crashed anyway.

out of state is not the issue... out of country would be if the bird wasn't banded.

yes, you can microchip, but the trick is to find a good organization to register the chip with

Some states require that birds kept as pets be banded; some don't. Some will accept a chip rather than a band; some won't.
If you move to a state that requires a band, you may run into problems. Unlikely, maybe. But something to think about.

Problem is that birds smaller than or equal in size to a Pionus are really too small to be chipped.
Also bear in mind that a ring/band not on the bird is worthless legally speaking.
You could have bought it from anywhere/one to make a wild caught bird legit..
(of course I am not accusing anyone, just stating a fact)
