"Surgery" went very well. I had help from another BB member (and good friend of mine), Laura. One foot went well and we were able to open up the scab and quite a bit of hard pus was easy to extract, while the other was a bit more stubborn. I was afraid to dig any deeper so we just packed with betadine and korn flour. Both feet were bandaged up with steri strips, gauze and tape, making sure there was lots of padding on the weight-bearing pad to aid healing. I rebandaged yesterday and had a look at her feet- the swelling has gone down already! and the foot is soft rather than rock hard. I gave her a warm salt foot bath then gently scrubbed the area clean and put on some betadine and sugar (supposed to draw out pus) before bandaging everything back up. She was eating and drinking well after I was finished and was very lively walking around the bathroom clucking to herself. The hospital cage has a towel at the bottom (more comfortable for Bella) with newspaper on top which is changed daily.

great job! I know I get a little shakey just before I am about to do some invasive medical aid for an animal. I'm glad it came out all right.

Ashling,
I just wanted to wish the best and good luck. I do know there are many things we now tend to rush our pets "off to the vets for" that 20 years ago my father would have treated himself.

So good luck and keep us posted.

Just an idea for a hospital perch that I made for Max when Merlin bit the bottom of his foot (he hated not having some kind of perch) I took a dowel and fixed it to a toilet paper roll fixture( cheapest one the home improment store sold), this made it close to the floor, but still a perch. I then wrapped the dowel in a wash cloth and taped the ends to keep the wash cloth on the dowel. It made Max a much happier camper for the 4 to 6 weeks he had to stay in the hospital cage.

He had a soft cloth lined perch that was only about an inch or 2 from the floor.

Glad all is going well, I knew if anyone could do it, it would be you.

I have to say I admire your courage in performing this operation...

Keep us posted, I'm so glad the Bella seems to be going well so far. I would have never been able to do that, you are very brave. >_>
