Thank you for this sticky... I remind the kids every day that the birds are out... don't go in and out the door. They now ask or look to see if the birds are out before opening a door.

I like the idea of the sign for the front door. Will definitely look at getting one made for when the birds are out.

I want to add about aviary security as well for those with with birds outside. Keep in mind what the floor is made of (some birds will dig dirt), any gaps that your bird may get out through and if possible adding safety flights (also known as air locks).

I lost an IRN a few years ago from my aviaries. We just hadn't got around to getting some things finished. Floor was still dirt with substrate and the safety flight hadn't been put up. She dug from one side, dogs dug from the other side. I cam out to see her on the outside of the aviary, went over to her and she promptly flew off to the neighbours tree. That was the last I saw of her. Our aviaries now have solid concrete bases and where possible we've put safety flights on.

No argument. But my point is that accidents happen - even in the most careful household. The first plan should be prevention and recall training the "just in case" plan. Frankly it doesn't take a lot of time to teach a parrot to "come" when called.

They're pretty smart kids...

Best investment I ever made!! I have one for each bird, and they come in all different sizes. Wear as frontpack, backpack, or shoulder bag. Also you can buy a stroller made to put these in! Keeps food and water available, and you can totally enclose it, or have the sides and front just the mesh for ventilation. Also has 2 toys hooks. Comes with 2 bowls, perch, and removable bottom plastic tray. Perches can be moved to 3 different heights. Comes in 2 colors. Also has seatbelt capability. We used these for hiking, and now several times for trips out for toys. The fids love them!! We can take them out for walks or a daytrip... and it keeps them from other animals (if you're wearing them) as well as keeping flighted birds safe. Great for those fids who won't wear harnesses or flight suits, too! I've done a LOT of looking, and couldn't find anything else close with the same benefits. Slightly pricey...but again, it's worth it. Keeps the birds safe and able to go just about anywhere with us! It's called Pak O Bird, and you can get them from a number of different websites. The cheapest is from Stylish Pet Carrier & Air Purifiers, Cat Condos, Outdoor Enclosures at PetAbbey.com. Just search the site for carriers.

I second Jag's suggestion; I highly recommend this carrier. :)

Excellent....exactly what I was talking about.

I hope everyone that reads this thread takes it seriously. These are our babies, our Feathered Children, and keeping them safe is our responsibility.

Please keep all the suggestions coming and hopefully we'll have alot less lost birds and unhappy owners.

one question....are the straps that go over your shoulders, adjustable for us "larger" people? Sometimes back packs are either uncomfortable or just don't work on a larger frame. Thanx

The straps are adjustable. It's hard to measure, but it looks like you'd have 16 inches from the pack to your front or back. It also has a strap to handle like a 'purse' hangs. I'm not very little, and neither is my wife.. and we haven't even had to adjust them out any. It also has a small strap that goes from one shoulder strap to the other so it doesn't slide off. Our kids have 'worn' the birds, as well as both of us. The pic on one website shows a pretty large man with one on... although it's a sketched pic. We've gotten SO many comments while out with the fids!!

When we took them out to Petsmart for toys/food yesterday, we saw a baby sun that they had there. When Rico saw it... he started saying "Hi, Rico!" I kept telling him that this baby couldn't talk yet, LOL! They get excited now when the packs come out...because they know they are getting to go somewhere! I use puppy pads on the bottom for easier clean up. The water bottles that are recommended for use with these are hard to find now... but I did get 2 on Amazon (thanks to a link from someone here) and they can be refilled from the top without having to remove the bottle...or you could add an ice chip or two if the water got a little warm from the sun. The celltei website has accessories. They are really sharp looking. I've been very happy with them!
