"The expanding market for pet parrots has led to the development of a number of facilities that mass-produce these birds. Although baby parrots are very dependent on their parents for care, breeders or retailers often separate the young birds from their parents to market them as “hand-raised” birds and to encourage the parent birds to produce more offspring.
Unfortunately, some of these unweaned birds are sold to inexperienced individuals who are unable to recognize when they are improperly hand-feeding their birds to the point of sickness or starvation. Pet shops and temporary markets also inspire “impulse” purchasing, which further increases the chances that the buyer will be unprepared for the responsibility of hand-feeding.
Because hand-feeding a baby parrot is a complex process, tragic complications can result, especially in the hands of inexperienced individuals."
