Quaker madness.

Well, I'm putting a deposite on a Quaker tonight,
(the parents are still on eggs)
So i'll send updates!

Quaker lovers, tell me what i'm in for!
I've handled Quakers before, just never owned one.

**The handicapped quaker got into a really good home.
Thats all I wanted to see anyway, so my wish was fullfilled.

I HAD a quaker, I moved out of state - and then to a second state - so unfortunately I had to put him into a good home before all the moving.

Anyways -

They are LOUD! Well, not ear shattering high pitch loud but the noises they make - especially when there is more than one, can be pretty bad.
It's more of a chatter though not a scream.

Mine was pretty playful, and acrobatic, he began speaking at a very young age - maybe 3-4 months, and learned words very fast. Though his voice wasn't completely clear. He was cuddly with me, and liked to be held and scratched on the neck.

He was a jealous bird, and went after a few people, but he never really bit me, although I have known a very aggressive quaker that bit a chunk out of my head lol.

As far as talking, this is exactly what mine sounded like -
YouTube - Pluto Quaker Parrot - He knows when he is naughty.
I was trying to find a video of the noise they make most of the day but can't, anyways it's a very distinct noise that only quakers make!

Hope this helps some - it's been a long time.

Well I have one quaker and I am about to add another.
I love quakers. They tend to have a TON of personality.
That being said my first quaker Jacob is VERY VERY quiet, and not just for a quaker.
I know that is unusual though. I don't know my new quaker well enough yet.
I go and visit 1-2 a week but they are usually short visits so I don't get to hear her make normal chattering noise.

They can be very bossy, and sometimes very shy (depends on the hand raising I think)
If you let them they can also be one person birds so early socialization is important!
Jacob gets along with my other birds as long as they don't try and bother him. He seems to have a special affinity with my DY amazon Chester, but again don't expect that either.
A lot of quakers do not like other birds at all.
I have worked with a ton of quakers when I worked at a pet store and I don't think I came across one that I disliked and the first bird I was convinced I was going to buy (because I was so in love with him) was a quaker - too bad he was sold half an hour before I was going to put a payment on him (sigh)

Anyway I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with a quaker!

happy hatching
Melanie

I haven't met a shy quaker, from what I have seen they are very bold and bossy.
They have quite a big attitude for such a small bird!

One I met did not want to leave his cage but not because he was shy, just because he really DID NOT want to!
They have a way of getting what they want!

I think they are great little birds, that don't know they are little:) Nicky was my first, he passed 2 yrs ago form FLD, so it's important to keep their diet in check. Nicky was a rehome, so he could have had a different personality had he been in different home from the start. I always say he was part Rottweiler and part Macaw. He was a aggressive little guy with most people, but such a little character that no body minded when he took a chunk out of them. Next came Dolittle, also a rehome. She is a great talker and very cage aggressive. She loves her Dad though and will do anything for him. Next came Doc, she was kept in a cage in a basement with no human contact, so she is still pretty skittish of all us. At last (at the moment) is Sprout. She loves everyone and is very sweet, but doesn't have much of a vocab yet. I love Quakers and would never hesitate to add another:) Good luck with your baby, I'm sure you will be very pleased,
