Bleach is not good unless it can be completely rinsed off. What does work well as a disinfectant is a combination (applied separately) of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Completely safe and effective, can be used to sanitize produce also.

Pet Focus

My breeder recommended Pet Focus. You can get it ready to use, or concentrate. From avitec.com:

One-step, no-rinse disinfectant, virucide, fungicide, mildewstat and cleaner. It is safe for use on cages, walls, floors, toys, perches and counters without rinsing. Rinse off when used on feeding equipment, dishes, water bottles, or feeding syringes.

Features:

The only disinfectant specifically formulated for avian use. EPA certified effective against more than 50 pathogens, including those responsible for Exotic Newcastles’s, Psittacosis, Avian Infulenza, and Avian Polyoma as well as Klebsiella, E. Coli, Pseudomonas and more.

Technical Specifications:

Pet Focus is EPA approved to be effective against the Avian Influenza Virus.
Although bio-security authorities indicate that the U.S. is only on alert for the newest outbreak of Avian Influenza Virus on U.S. soil, other authorities agree it may only be a matter of time.

Avian Influenza Virus is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of flu. All birds may be considered susceptible to infection with Avian Influenza. Avian Influenza Virus doesn't usually infect humas, but the first documented infection of humans with an Avian Influenza Virus was in Hong Kong in 1997.

I use antibacterial dish soap for food and water dishes and to clean cages. I just make sure to rinse them very, very well.

There are several types of disinfectants available in the market. I find the tablet form the best that dissolve in water instantky and can fight against germs such as viruses, gram positive and gram negative bacteria, fungi (molds and yeasts), and mycoplasma.

I only disinfect toys that I buy second hand from the baby goods store, then I use bleach,a goodly slurp in a bowl or bucket...if it smells then its probably strong enough. For day to day cleaning I use lemon or vinegar 50/50 with water, there is no need to disinfect if there is no infection/illness present. So far (nine years) I have had no problems.

I use GSE (Grape Fruit Seed Extract). You can buy it at the health food store. Good for all sorts of stuff. Pretty much kills everything.

Vinegar and Water on cages and floors, dishsoap on dishes. Just read about Grapefruit Seed Extract. it's on my list. You can use that on dishes too, I read it's a great disinfectant.
