Another one is "doors". I still have a hard time living it down. I did not have my birds wings clipped because I have dogs and did not want it going to the floor. I never allowed that. But, instead it was the fridge door that that ended her life. We had company over, and I had let her out on top of her cage for dinner, mistake #1. I peeked in on her, she was eating, I opened the fridge only a moment later and shut it. That was it...broke her neck. In a matter of seconds. I do not know if she flew onto the butter door or was flying down to my shoulder at the time. I am short so the top of the door is above my eye level. She usually would tweet when flying so I always knew her next move, not this time. I hate to keep re-hashing this but I do not want it to happen to anyone else. I have seen pics of peoples birds perched on top of the fridge or on boings over it. The memory of it is so gruesome. Everyone seen it...just awful. I wish I had clipped her wings and just kept her seperate from the dogs...period.

Thanks for posting this info. There was a few things I did'nt know.

Faith,
Even though it is hard for you to bring up what happened, I am gald you did. The fridge is a danger to our birds. I have heard of birds running underneath and climbing into the moving motor parts in the back. The kitchen is not safe at all.

Thanks so much for the insights - all of you - such a sad thing, loosing a pet because of one mistake. Kind of you to worry about the rest of us. I'm keeping the info.

Faith....I remember when you lost your little Kiwi....and i am sorry that you had to go through that. But I want you to remember one very important thing. You are sharing a lesson. A hard lesson. One you were unfortuate to have to deal with. By you sharing, you might save someone elses baby. Several of us on here have learned some very hard lessons. Ones we WISH we never had to learn and ones we live with daily. It is because of these lessons that WE share, that we can help others. So no matter how many times you share your story, keep in mind, there is ALWAYS someone out there that is thankful that you were strong enough to look past your own pain to help them in some way.
Some people might also get tired of hearing about my Sampson Bell. But ya know what? If I didnt share my lesson, I know many others would have suffered and even more would have died. I've had people contact me from all over the world because of his story. I've saved all his paperwork and test results for a reason. If it takes me to look through his information to help another, I keep in mind, behind that bundle of feathers who is sick, is also attached a mom or dad who is hurting/confused and scared.

so thank you again for sharing.
and also, many moons ago, I had a canary who was closed in bedroom door by a visitor to my house. he did not survive either.

Yikes. All of that just about makes you wanna shy away from having a bird at all.
Apparantly, by reading those horror stories, we should treat our birds ALWAYS, ALWAYS like a 2 year old. I mean, really, who would have thought about a bird getting into a computer printer??
So, after reading it, it brings home even more the reason when Dood the tiel gets down, the first person who lets him down announces loudly.
BIF!
*short for bird in floor. stupid, but it works in our house with kids.
Thanks for all the insights, that should be printed and handed out with each new baby being sent out.
Mark

This is a thread worth saving.I liked that the vet not only warns about the dangers to unclipped birds but also warns of dangers to the clipped birds. Anyways thanks for posting such valuable info!
