Kept in a Bedroom
I was just wondering why it seems bad to keep a bad in a bedroom? I often read people here saying that when the have taken a re-home that it was being kept in a bedroom like it is a really bad thing.
All my birds live in my bedroom. All my pets except my cats and my turtle actually. Is it because they might get less attention (I spend most of my time at home in there) or a lack of light (I have 2 huge windows)? Am I doing anything wrong?

I keep Cookie in my bedroom, and my sister keeps Toc in her bedroom... The only reason i could think of why it would be bad is that bedrooms aren't usually a place the whole family spends time, so the bird wouldn't get alot of interaction.. but in my opinion its fine as long as they get lots of atttention... I have Cookie out all the time, she's only locked in her cage at night, and she gets the run of my room when im not home.. i dont see anything wrong with it !

I found that Luca preferred my bedroom over any other location we tried....she was much more content to sleep peacefully knowing I was near her doing the same!
The only issue I face is coming in late at night to crawl into bed. I feel bad about waking them, and Etty hasn't gotten used to it, so he'll startle and hiss at whatever the weird shadow is that's moving around. But usually if I talk to him he'll settle quickly. If anything, it's more of a pain to me...because if they aren't particularly tired enough all three will start climibing around and making little noises that make it rather difficult to fall asleep quickly! Oh...and other than that, you don't really want to keep them by windows or vents. They could catch a chill or overheat in the sun. If that's hard to do in your bedroom setup and you can't adjust that, you may want to look into something else. Currenly looking into beds or falls to add a dark space each fid can sleep so I don't disturb them too much anymore, btw. Or just buy a little night light so I don't have to turn on any dimmers. ^^ |

I've heard that, too. But from what I heard on other message boards, the issue (beyond the fact that the bird might not be getting attention) is respiratory problems for the owner, especially with the dustier birds. Which I found silly because both my budgies I kept in my room and never experienced any problems...

Yeah, i feel bad about waking them by accident when i go to bed, too. Cookie gets pretty annoyed with me and the dogs! heehe, last night Puck (my chihuahua) fell off the bed and started whining and crying (he's fine, he's just a cry baby, he's scared of everything and tends to overreact :P ) and Cookie FLIPPED out! Haha it was cute.
The only other promblem i have is being woken up in the morning. I'm not a morning person, at all. But usually i can keep her quiet by giving her some morning treats, some food, talking to her for a while, or opening her cage door so she can play on her huge plat stands while i sleep more :P

The cages aren't actually in front of the window but there is a lot of light in the room.
Falsk, I have heard about dusty birds but I only have one tiny cockatiel and I think that my cat fur would cause more respiratory problems than my Dobby. I am glad that other people do the same as I do.

Ohh I can understand that.. sometimes I'll be at the computer and Bebe on my shoulder will flutter and the dust that she sends through the air is quite annoying.. but I open windows and vacuum.. there is air flow etc. So unless someone was a total pig I don't think there is any problem.
