Molting Support Group

Who has a molting bird at the moment? My poor Humphrey is molting so hard right now. I've never seen her molt this heavily. There are feathers and fluff all over my living room, and her neck is FULL of pins (which she won't let me preen). Yesterday she lost a superlong gorgeous tail feather...today's loss was a beautiful primary flight. She is also very testy and nippy. My poor girl. I know it's just cause she'suncomfortable. Who else ismolting?

Michele and Humph

Both of my birdies are molting. This is Willow's first molt too...he has pin feathers all over his head and neck but no new wing or tail feathers yet...probably not for a while either. Mango doesn't let me preen his head either but Willow does...and he LOVES it.

The Fabulous Margarita looks like Pinhead and is just as rotten. This is the worst molt she's ever had and she's making sure we all know it. Thankfully, a warm shower really does seem to help her. Usually, she prefers cool ones, but the warmer water does soften the sheaths better.

Both of my fids are going through their first molt! One looks like he has the measles, while the other has a head full of pin feathers!

At least one loves to give himself a bath at least every other day, and the other is just plump lazy! She enjoys me misting her instead! Hormones and crankiness galore!

As for me... I have to vacuum twice as much and empty the hand held even more as it constantly is filled with feathers and down now!

It is full moulting season here at beit ha Tukiot. Scarlets can be a bit beaky when full of pinfeathers, however I am fortunate, neither O'Hara nor AyatLeila are being particularly snarky. On the Blue & Gold side of the house, life goes on as ever, with little noticable accomadation made to the discomfort of new feather growth.

I have a question, how does the new feathers look like when they are comming in?
My CAG is loosing a lot of his feathers under his wing, I thought he was plucking his feathers but when i read all this threads.....I realize maybe he is molting.
Coco (My CAG) has white looking things in some parts under his wing and the rest looks bold (?)
I don't know what is going on......

New feathers are coated in keratin, a whitish waxy substance. When they first emerge, they will look like little black pins peeking out from the skin. As they mature, the pins become whitish and then the feather sheath can be removed. With the exception of the head, I wouldn't de-pin a grey. They can usually do it themselves. The macaws, however, need a little help. Their feather sheaths are very large (like angel hair pasta).

Every one here is just getting over the molting. It was pretty rough. My CAG rarely sheds tail feathers but we've lost several this time. Even the B/G's have lost some of their long tail feathers. It think we are over the worst of it. Phoebe will not let us help her with her pins, but I did notice that she is allowing Gabriel to preen her some.

Shamrock is having a terible first molt! He has little tiny pins all over. And man is he CRAAAANKY!!! He keeps coming over bending his little head down for a rub and then nipping after about 30 seconds of rubs...then doing it all over again. :eusa_wall He has even come over and rubbed himself against us! My poor little baby! He goes "swimming" several times a day lately. I refill his little pool several times a day to make it warmer and fresh! I hope it gets over soon...he just seems so unhappy!
