Rescued GW macaw. UPDATE.

Here's an update on the rescued green-wing macaw.

I decided to call her Big Red (creative, I know). I named her that mainly because the only feathers she has are the red ones on her head and, I love the gum. I still haven't bought a cage for her, I was going to but she has been on a perch for a couple weeks and is a very good girl. I have a travel cage in case I need to put her in it for the vet or something. She only got down from her perch ONCE, that was because she chewed through the wood and fell on the floor, when I got home I was running around scared out of my mind. But as soon as I was leaving the family room there she was turning the corner and walking to me, all you heard was her feet clicking on the floor, haha. Then she started to hop!! it was great.

Big red is SO very quiet, the only time she really screams is when she hears me come home. For not being handled in two years she "steps-up" with no problem. I can pet her all over, she lifts up both her wings when she wants me to itch her under her wings. She goes in the shower with no problem and will clean herself when she's in the shower. She has not once tried to bite me, at first she did threaten but it was my fault because I moved to fast around her. So far I'm the only one who picks her up, that's because everyone in the family is afraid to touch her.

As far as her feathers, she's doing pretty well. After getting a few showers and better food her feathers are shiny and some new ones are growing in!. They're growing in on her feet and her back. None on her stomach but I'm not too concerned because I knew those might not grow back. I can't tell if she's still chewing them.. all her feathers were chewed when I got her but I don't know if she's still chewing on them. Whenever I'm around she never chews or plucks. She does prene.

It's sad to think about it, next year I'm leaving for college, whoever ends up being the adoptee will have an amazing girl!. I really wish I could bring her. The only thing I don't want is for her to end up from home to home. The reason why I rescued her was to get her out of the previous state. And to re-socialize her with people. I really didn't have to try hard at all.. she's so sweet.

I'm not looking to adopt her around for a few more months, but if anyone is interested in this sweet girl please contact me at

It would be a good idea to post where you are...so interested parties have an idea if it would be feasible to adopt her...

Thanks! She really is more than I could ever ask for. I'm going to college to be a large animal vet (8+ years). It wouldn't be fair for me to be so busy and not have time for her.
I'm not sure how she would do with kids, it scares her if you move too fast.
