Keeping your parrots when you're moving.

quick question out of curiosity.

Lets say you own parrots that are illegal to own in a different country, would you still be able to keep them since you've had them for so many years? If not is there a way to have a license?

I'm wondering because after college I might be moving outside of canada.

If they are illegal then they are illegal - against the law - to own. If there is a license or other form of grandfathering available it would state so in the statutes of the country you are moving to.

You really need to consult the proper authorities (government agencies or lawyers) to get all the information. The information will differ between countries. If you post the "moving to" country some people may have country-specific information.

I wish all that mattered was you had them a long time! Unfortunately, like NotEnoughTime said, the law is the law and illegal is still illegal regardless. I know that when you move to another country you can *sometimes (most of the time I think)* take your dogs but they even have to be quarantined for about 3 or 4 months. Its insane. What kind of birds do you have that wouldnt be allowed wherever you are going?

Usually it's illegal to own them either because they're endangered or the country/state is worried about invader species (that is: species that are non-native to a given area). Usualy it's because these animals could severely impact the environment and/or the country/state system's ability to function properly...ie: fireants, which have no native predator in North America and as such have gotten completely out of control in the South. ...or brown snakes in Hawaii.

So...whether you obtained them legally elsewhere or not does not defeat the invader species reasoning.

Still, I would contact the embassy/state government of wherever you're going and address the issue with them. They may have special allowances if it's based on something else.

With good reason! Unfortunately, the irresponsibility of a lot of our fellow humans punishes the rest of us when it comes to pets and the like. And there's always the risk of accidental release.
