Pics and question..

Does anyone have any information on training a blind parrot? She only meant to be blind in one eye, but i don't think her vision is great in the other.. she can find food ok and she responds to my voice, but she can be kinda clumsy and sometimes has these little 'episode's' where she can't control her head movement and it twitches...

i just want to be able to teach her something, but i have no idea how to even start...

and pics as promised :)

lexi and squibly's double cage. she lives on the bottom one..

lexi on her travel cage

their 'toy bin' that i keep my toy making stuff.

squibly and the cool raffia toy i made him!

yes, they were making out...

warning me away from his 'girlfriend'

i am rally late for work and my internet is capped so i will post more later :) i am very proud of my babies...

Can't say I have any great suggestions as I haven't worked with an untame blind parrot before. However, if she hasn't been to an avian vet yet, I would recommend a trip to ensure she's healthy.

She spent prett ymuch the first few months of her life at the vet, she's been tested for everything. she's not sick.

also, she will step up for me and she very snuggly. what i want to do is teach her how to fly, even if i have to clip her if she can't do it well, i at least want to give her the chance..

maybe even some tricks... using a clicker maybe? i want her to have a full life, with lots of stimulation... not just eat, snuggle, sleep...

If she can't see I don't think I would teach her to fly... she could really hurt herself.. she could hit things...

you have very cute little babies!

I agree on the others about flight, and good to know she's healthy!

Perhaps get her some foraging bins then? It's not tricks or anything but probably something she would still enjoy!

Awww I love that they are friends!!! Too adorable. Those pictures are so cute.

I dont think flying is a good idea either. I think it would be very scary for her with her vision already not so great. You said she is clumsy - I would recommend maybe putting everything in her cage lower if possible. This could prevent having a bad fall. I did this with Oliver when he was a baby, he was quite the clumsy little guy, it really helped him to have things lower. Also, I put a towel at the bottom to brace for any falls. It was really easy to wash and provided some comfort for him when he would fall.

i have foraging toys for her. she has a thing with a lid filled with dried fruit n nut treats, although she hasn't 'found' it yet. i have anything cage type toy with a hole in the top i can hide bananas n stuff in there. plus my friend is ordering me some really cool stuff from her shop, since i don't have this wholesaler as a supplier at mine.

i know she can still see out of her right eye. there def is some vision although i just don't know how good it is. when i say i want her to be able to fly i mean outside only in a harness, we have a park with a nice open area, and inside she would learn the layout really quickly. it's only a small house. at this point in time she is clumsy and falls off her playstand sometimes and it's really scary. usually i'm right there ready to catch her but what if i go to the toilet and she slams into the wall after falling? it would make me feel much better inside if i knew she were capable enough to catch herself when she falls. i think it would really improve her balance a lot. like i said, if i were wrong, and she couldn't do it, then i'd clip her straight away. she's clipped now and has such strong wings i just know she'd be capable of flight right now, i just need to find a way to 'teach' her how. i've tried running with her and she just doesn't even flap :( i've tried throwing her into the air and catching her. that didn't work either...

Squibly was clipped when we got him and i don't think he even learned how to fly before it was done because only 2 years later if he just starting to 'get' it.

i've looked for information online but it's all so generalised and mostly for totally blind ones.. i'm gonna at least try... i just need some help in how to do it. does anyone have any links?
