Rico's flying :0)

We have had Rico since January, and I know for certain that his last two homes clipped his wings. So he has not really flown for at least 7.5 years or so. I decided to let his primaries grow out, and he is flying more and more each day. It was funny, but this morning my husband was still in bed (he works nights), and I was out in the kitchen preparing breakfast for everyone and he yells out to me that Rico just flew around the perimeter of the room and then back to his cage....I guess just for the heck of it. Later today he flew off his perch and landed on the tub of Nutri-Berries I was carrying towards him to let him pick one, and then this afternoon he flew from the perch in our living room, down the hall, and to his cage in the bedroom. It may sound silly, but I am so proud of my little guy. He also seems quite proud of himself. The first few times he flew he seemed quite winded afterwards, but I think he is building up his pectoral muscles and it must be getting easier for him. It makes me wonder how many times he randomly flies around the bedroom and I do not know it.....The look on his face is priceless, though! He thinks quite highly of himself.

Aww! That's got to be a thrill for him! My Rico flies and gets winded all the time...I think he eats more than what he ought to, or he just gets winded!!

What kind of bird is your Rico?

Thank you! I'd imagine you'd have to have more room to fly a zon than a conure! Do you have any pics?

He will get less and less winded as time goes on. Pepper used to get winded easy, not any more! LOL That's a great story, thanks for sharing.

LOL! I know exactly what you mean! After Nitro takes a big flight, his neck is all stretched out and is like "Woah!!"

That's so exciting though! I love watching parrots fly around. Are you going to start training Recall soon?

Loved the story - nice to hear he is enjoying flight!! And I agree with Hollyhawkz - as time goes on he will get less winded and fly longer distances.

Be careful!! I was not thinking yesterday and walked out on my deck to grab a bucket and *thump* a bird was on my shoulder... She could have easily continued on into the back yard, neighbours yard or tree... Just a momentary lapse too...

You must be really happy. Chiquita and Boomer are fully flighted and it’s amazing to seem them fly, congratts. You will see him whip past your head from time to time. They get so close to your head you can feel the wind of their wings.
