I was cleaning out my garden . . .

My garden dried up a couple of mos ago and it was too hot to clear it all out (we live in Phoenix). I finally got to the task this AM and found several millet sprays! I had cleaned some of the bird cages near the garden and must have grown some. I'm thinking about planting some more millet since the rest of my garden was not that productive this year. I was able to grow lettuce for awhile, but the rest of the plants didn't do so great. So basically it's a bird-food garden with the lettuce (which was mostly for them) and now the millet, and I did grow some nice sunflowers too.

It is interesting to see where millet will grow. We found some growing as "weeds" in my wife's flower boxes which are near the outside birdfeeder. Gari's leftovers go there with some additional seed for the wild birds.

We had a pretty productive garden this year but had to water three times a week because of the heat. My water bill is double my last year's one. Gari has enjoyed all the fresh veggies. She actually enjoys carrots from the garden while turning up her beak at the ones from the local organic market... The storebought/marketbought carrots must sit out too long for her taste - or she likes the variety we plant. This year she learned how to shell peas. It was an interesting process to watch her open the pod and take out the young sweet peas... Peas are over now and I bet she misses them...

Our sunflowers get eaten before we can harvest them - the wild birds thank us very much for planting them. Sometimes we can get most of a head - but we usually let the birds have the sunflower seeds in exchange for our strawberries... It seems a good trade...
