Question Rock Pebbler: A few Questions

I have three questions about my Rock Pebbler.
I have a 1 year old rock pebbler named Dill and I was wondering how to tell if it is a male or a female, other then DNA sexing because I don't care that much, as Dill is a pet. I know the males are yellower, Dill is more on the yellow side but i also read somewhere that females have pink on the underside of there tail and Dill does. So is Dill a She?

My second question is I am planning on getting another small parrot, what types get along with the rock pebbler? and should I get a bird of the opposite sex, the same, or does it matter?
Thanks!

I have never seen one of these parrots. I just googled it, they are very pretty!! I dont know anything about sexing but if what you are reading mainly suggests DNA sexing than that is probably what you will have to do. I did read that they can be VISUALLY sexed but not until they are 2 years old. If they are younger than that than you need to do DNA to be positive.

As far as getting another bird, there is really no clear cut way of what birds will get along with other birds. Its always kind of a gamble. My personal opinion would be that a bird of the same species would do best because they are somewhat a like but at the same time, this doesnt always ring true. I had lovebirds who hated one another and lovebirds who loved one another - so I guess species doesnt really matter. You can pretty much get whatever bird you want and cross your fingers that they get along. I have a parrotlet and recently got a painted conure and although they havent been introduced yet, I am hoping they will be friends. I do know, though, that this is not entirely possibly and will accept them disliking one another.

Best of luck finding another fid - keep us posted!!

Thanks for your help. I was thinking about getting another rock pebbler but they are so hard to find!!! Should I DNA sex Dill before I get another or does this not matter? Thanks again and congratulations on your new bird!

I dont think it matters what the sex is, but what you DO need to think about is if you want them to breed or not or what you would do if they DID breed. When I got a second lovebird I got another male. In the lovebird world you usually have better success with two males rather than 2 females, plus I didnt want 2 nesty hens on my hands!!! Its all a matter of preference really, as far as what you want to get, male or female.

& yes rock pebblers must be hard to find - I never heard of one until you posted!! = )

I'd opt to do the DNA sexing -- I just like to know! That way, if you have a female (or end up with a second parrot that is female) you can take steps to prevent egg-laying or other breeding behaviors.

I'd guess that another species of Polytelis parrot would work out nicely; maybe a Superb or a Princess of Wales? The former might be more difficult to find but they are SO beautiful. POWs are just lovely and I always hear such good things about them from people who have them.

My princess parrot is a but of a drama queen and she is the boss of her cage. She and my cockatiel play together but they need to have a food bowl each and when they both decided that a particular style of perch was THEIR bed I had to get another.

She is lovely though :)

Hi!! I own a rock pebbler. Her name is Moo-shoo, and she is dna'd female. She has quite a few posts (with pictures, if you'd like to compare) in the Australian Grass Parrots section. She is a wonderful girl with an amazing personality. I've heard that you rockies get along best with very mild mannered, non aggressive birds. I've posted a few informational threads on them, so check out some of my previous threads & see if any of them might be helpful.

Also, if you would like the information of the breeder where I got Moo-shoo from, just let me know... she was wonderful!!!!

Oh, and I would absolutely LOVE to see pics of your little one.

I have a Rock ....named Rocky.... and my sister had his siter. Rocky has a very flat head and his sister has a very rounded head.
He has several sisters and brothers (CAG, tiels, keets and finches) but he only allows the female cockatiel be close to him (even sleeping in his cage, bathing in his water bowl and eating his food)
He isn't the sharpest crayon in the box but he does have a heck of a personality.
