What does "fid" stand for?

I keep seeing people refer to their birds as fids, but I can't figure out what that stands for. Can someone please explain? Thanks!

Hah! I love that thread.

I dunno, I just picked up "fid" because it was short and...catchy? For awhile I wasn't even sure of the exact true meaning, I just started using it without even thinking. o.0

FIDS - What does FIDS stand for? Acronyms and abbreviations by the Free Online Dictionary.

Hey, you can also save on FIDS at Amazon!

Amazon.com: fids

I know some people hate the word 'fid'... but when I shop for them as much as my human kids...worry about them as much, and put on the TV, radio, or movies for their watching/listening enjoyment... it fits.

Okay, clearly I have given this too much thought, but...

I think the reason I started using that term was because the word "fid" to me sounds like something that is at once, adorable, endearing, enraging, petulant, emotional, fitful, and all together loveable.

....I think I think the same of the word "kid", but with the f it reminds me of the word "fit".

I feel this decription quite perfectly matches my fids. XD

For the record, I would never use the word "fabies"...but I do call the younger two (Karis and Etty) my babies. Cause, you know, they are Luca is my teenager or my little girl. Sometimes even my daughter. Mainly when I was making my ex (blargh) feel bad about something about her. "How dare you say that ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER!"

...always hilarious, that.

Later in life, I will probably torture my future children by referring to them as "siblings". Growing up, I had a cocker spaniel that was basically my sister.

Not too long ago, I had a cat that was my "husband" 0 _ 0
Well, he acted like it.

It just depends on what the personality of the creature is...but usually it is akin to some type of family member.

There's a reason why I have "fids" in my signature!

On the contrary though, birds are not "little humans," they are *BIRDS.* We should not be anthropomorphising birds, or any animals for that matter. I'm not saying that animals *don't* have feelings and emotions, because I believe that they do, however, not within the same context as humans. Animals (non-human) have their own reasons for doing what they do.
If a bird says "I love you" to you, does it really love you, or is the bird just parroting words?

A good example of anthropomorphism... a bird is biting it's owner and refuses to step up. Owner concludes that the bird must "hate" them, and wants to get the bird to "like" them. The real situation could be that the bird is afraid, scared, and trapped. Basically being backed up into a corner and/or clipped so that the bird cannot escape, the bird tries to use body language to convey to the owner that they are not comfortable with the humans presence... yet, the owner forces the subject, gets too close, and ends up getting bitten. The bird hasn't learned to *trust* (not "like") the human.

Parrots are often described as "2-4 year olds that never grow up." However, that couldn't be any further than the truth. Many people buy a young loving parrot who's friendly with everyone, and extremely cuddly (assuming the bird warms up to you quickly). They then expect the parrot to remain this way for the rest of it's life, then wonder why within a few months or years all of a sudden their bird is biting, screaming, and being hormonal. Some of these people even wonder how they can get their parrot to be the way it was when the bird was younger! You can't though, the bird grew up! It is now an adult and should thus be treated as such, not as a baby.

You would not go into your 24 year olds room, flip them on their back and tickle their stomach! If a bird does no care to be treated like an infant anymore, then it should not be forced onto them!

As "cute and endearing" as the word "fid" is, is there really any justice in using it? That's something for you to decide! I'm not saying you shouldn't use the word, but if you do use it, be sure to remember that your bird is still a bird that grows up, and not a human infant in feathers. I feel it's a bit of a disservice to them if we believe otherwise.
