Question Root X (sewer treatment)-- Safe?

RootX Root Killer

Does anyone have experience with this product? We have roots growing in the sewer line, and the plumber recommends it. I just want to make sure there won't be any fumes (that might be undetectable to people) that might harm Orion. The plumber doesn't know, and the company that makes Root X hasn't called me back.

Of course, I don't keep Orion in the bathroom so he wouldn't be directly exposed.... I just would rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks!

Okay, I read through the site info...

It's only got a "caution", which means the risk is low...it also says it does not fumigate. But anything that foams is going through a chemical reaction. Likely whatever is in it is harmful to plants, not everything in general.

My suggestion? If you can, while running the treatment, remove the bird from the house. If that isn't possible, at least have him in a room that is nowhere near piping, close the door, stuff something under any crevices, and open a window in the room to allow free air flow.

I'd also suggest closing any vents in the room/making sure the air is off when using it to make sure no fumes carry through the ventilation.

I figure...better to be safe than sorry, right? Doesn't sound like a huge risk, but like I said...anything that foams is going through a chemical reaction which will likely produce fumes, even if they are not harmful ones.

well, i really hope your toilet is working properly, and if that is the case then you should get any back-fumes from the sewer line (trust me, your nose would notice). the siphon system in the toilet has a region of standing water that serves as a blocker for fumes coming from the sewer line, which is where you got the roots...

i've used this stuff before and didn't smell anything in the house.

Remember though, not all harmful fumes are something you can smell. I'd use precaution either way.
