I don't know about Zoogen, but Avian Biotech sends out 'free DNA kits' which are probably paid for by the time you send that sample back in with some money included!

Zoogen makes it very easy now to collect the blood and can now be on a piece of paper. Back in the days of when you has to collect the blood sample in a capilliar tube and put the capilliar tube in a vial that had a solution that you would get from them and and send it that way, it could be kind of tricky in trying to get it to suck up into the capiliar tube which is a very thin straw like made of glass, I think! Then they had the small sample card about the size ofa business card and now samples are just on a piece of plain paper that you can print out the form from their website and fill out and put the blood in the lower right hand corner of the paper.

It is fairly easy to do the samples as long as you have one person to restrain the bird while the other does clipping and have your styptic powder right there to stop the bleeding, this is the only way I have done it.

Vets always charge more to do DNA's. However, when someone buys one of my babies, I only charge them on what Zoogen charges me which is $20. per bird.

Avian Biotech is 19.50 and they are quick. When I have had it done, I just bring the little card with me when it is time to do wings and nails. She doesn't charge anything to collect the sample for me. I like knowing their sexes, plus it helps to know if egg binding could be an issue down the road

I'm in Ontario and I use Healthgene. They're $21(taxes in) and you get the results in a couple of days. Their office is close enough to me that I can just drive over to drop off samples to save mail time. I charge $40 to DNA test other people's birds, so they don't have to do the nail clipping themselves. I am amazed that people will pay $60-$90 for a DNA test. I even get the results faster because the vets mail everything!! Like Jan, I also do DNA testing for anyone buying my baby lovebirds for cost.

Most always if I get it in the mail for like on Monday, I will usually have the results by Friday in which I phone in and get it faxed to me. Then they mail me the DNA Certificate in the mail. Zoogen is in Davis, California and I am just near southern California. This again is with Zoogen.

I still can't believe so many people do nail clipping. o.0

Feather plucking seems sooooo much more reasonable.

You'd think so, but in reality, you're clipping a single nail. One SQUAWK! and they forget about it .00004 seconds later.

You have to pull FIVE (5!) feathers for a feather DNA. That's 5 squawks and they remember it longer....

I live next door to Zoogen lol, I submit the sample on Monday, I have results on Tues or Wed.

The (now second) old vet I asked if they would let me bring in the card for DNA sexing... they said 'no'. Another great reason to dump him!!

I should know Apple's gender in about a week and a half. $50 and a tiny little snip is all it took. I think pulling out their feathers hurts MUCH more!

You could test them and send one for one of your fids you already know the sex for.
