DNA sexing - just throwin' this out there.

I always get junk mail relating to birds, and this one caught my eye. I'm a die-hard Zoogen user, but this might be of interest to others:

Here's a copy of the email:

Hello Tina,

My name is Helen and I am the Account Executive for SFO Medical. We are a biotech firm located in the bay area. We are contacting you about our bird sexing service. We are very competively priced. In fact our services are less than half that of many of our competitors including Avian Biotech. I have included our pricing and website information below. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you might have. Thank you for your time and have a great day.

No wonder it's so cheap... you collect your own stuff, including what you need to give the sample!

I don't know about Zoogen, but Avian Biotech sends out 'free DNA kits' which are probably paid for by the time you send that sample back in with some money included!

I don't bother with dna sexing as I only wanted companion tiels and after a while it is pretty easy to sex by behaviour. I would though if I was breeding.

Outside of visual sexing with some dimorphic birds, it's actually very important to sex your monomorphic birds. An emergency trip to the vet when you don't know the gender of your bird results in more time lost taking costly tests and radiographs to be certain it's not a gender related issue. Time lost is time that could have saved your bird.

I can't believe I'm thinking this but loving the markings on one of the 'tiel babes and considering keeping it for my breeding colony. However I need a female. I may well DNA just so I know now whether as a female she stays or as a male gets sold as a companion bird. Normally I wouldn't bother DNA sexing cockatiels but I need to get my ratios right.

...does it typically cost more for large birds? I paid liek 20-25 for Karis, and didn't have to pull the feathers myself either.

I got that email too from that company. I use Zoogen Services and have for years now and I am not about to change even if this other company is half the price. In question, how well is their accuracy of DNA's?!

Basically looks like the gal is going around to the differnt websites who are breeders who also raise babies. Must be trying her best to drum up business!
