You know a good place you can start is a local(ish) bird club. Since you don't currently have birds, try hitting up a bird fair or various bird shops. You can touch their birds, see the traits you like, the species you like.. and not worry about bringing disease home to your own flock, because you don't have one yet.

I have found that pet stores don't really have very tame or personable birds, but stores that specialize in birds (get them only from breeders they know, hand feed them, and spend time every day socializing them) will let you interact with their birds so you can see how you feel about a particular bird. At least, that has always been my experience. Good luck convincing your mom.
