Severe macaw acting strange

Our 8-year severe female has been acting strange of late. These acts include snapping of the wings when at rest, over-preening and a strange little quick-step dance that lasts for 5-10 seconds. When distracted, this all goes away. From birth she seemed to be an over-preener but it's now to the point where she actually creates an open sore on her legs. The vet has looked her over and found everything to be fine - except for the open sores which we apply an ointment to - she is normal weight, blood and stool okay, etc. She eats well, spends a fair amount of time outside her cage, she is treated like a little queen, has lots of toys, lots of light and lots of attention. We're thinking it's boredom, but we don't know. Anyone have any ideas? HELP!

Could it be an allergy? Was the vet an avian vet? Have you tried diet changes?

She has been seeing a well respected avian vet since she was born. Allergies? Hmm. Perhaps since it appears seasonal. Thanks.

Aspergillosis - haven't heard that one before. Read up on it after your posting. Thanks, I'll take that thought and run with it.
