From what I hear, they are cuddly as babies and then they grow up...
(edit: All I know is that they are noisy and destructive here in the wild, and they'll be noisy and destructive there in your house!) Oh and my step dad's parents had one and he was noisy and destructive. And bit people. a bit of info- http://www.avianweb.com/sulphurcrestedcockatoos.html I'd buy one if not for all their dust, and the fact that they will outlive you.

Any too is A LOT of work. If you ask them, they will tell you it's never enough attention. They're very destructive and can be unpredictable. If you are set on getting one, I would look into rehoming one and make sure it's a female. While they can be unpredictable (believe me) they are much easier than the males. I don't know how old your son is but they are hard work for an experienced mature adult. I personally do not recommend cockatoos as pets. They are so much happier in an outdoor aviary setting. Spend lots of time researching them and spend even more time around them. Not just the babies but the adults because the baby stage doesn't last long. The adult personality and behavior lasts forever. Having a cockatoo is like having a toddler and teenager rolled into one along with the normal bird issues. Read up on mytoos.com, join groups about cockatoos, and visit rescues that are full of them before agreeing to buy one. Also, consider that they are extremely dusty birds. Many people cannot handle the dust. Even people who can stand lots of greys can't handle the dander of toos. Also, talk to this breeder Hornbeam Aviary - Breeders of the Beautiful Cockatoo! especially if you decide on a baby. They are highly respected and understand cockatoos well. They are located here in Ohio. Good luck!

Good Grief Jag! If it's on his list then he should be doing the research. It sounds like you are actually thinking about abother bird in the house (even though you say not on your list). First deal with the child who doesn't even want her bird, for reasons she posted. (I won't go into it as it would be too embarassing) Second wait till all the birds you have now are settled in properly, and are behaving the way they need to be, which could take a year or two.
There! You asked for, and wanted a voice of reason from me before you got the CAG, well here it is now. Somewhat delayed, but there for you. Sooo never mind the secretly liking them, stay with the plan and wait til he's moved out and graduated. Elenora Cockatoo - Learn more about Elenora Cockatoos at Judy ... Actually, I'd suggest waiting too....but not just because of the other bird issues.
Because he's at school, he may not be able to spend as much time with the 'too...now, I know you guys could make up for that, but from everything that I have heard and read about Cockatoos (including that link someone put up), they are INCREDIBLY needy, clingy birds that form extremely tight bonds. My worry is that spending more time with those who are home, the 'too will bond to someone there and not your son first, the transition when he takes it on all by himself could be very difficult. Also, another concern would be....you said medical school? would that mean he'll be a doctor who's always on call? Which, is, you know, AWESOME, but aside from that...doctors don't tend to spen much time at home as it is, would he really be able to give the 'too all the ridiculous amounts of attention it needs? If not...he may want to look into a different genus, even if he really loves these guys....he may want one that's more tolerant of long separation, for both of their sakes. I just always go back to the one story about the 'too that tried to off himself when he thought he'd been abandoned. ; _ ; Major reason I will never get a 'too, no matter how much I like them. |

??? hmmmmm - i'm confused... if he's in med school, isn't he old enough to make these decisions including doing the research himself?!

Eh...i'm 25 (omg, just turned that like the day before yesterday! 0 _ 0) and if I ask Momma advice or talk to her about something she'll still do crazy amounts of research on it. We don't really ask for it....they just do it cause they love us and want whatevers best fo us.

well, asking for advice is one thing - but if i really want something (esp an animal) i do the main part of the research myself... nevertheless, it's me taking care of it and being responsible for its well-being in the end
(psst- and though i'm 32, i do remember being 25... i lived all by myself on the other side of the planet from my parents... didn't keep me from asking for advice, but required to make my own decisions and the required research for it)
