Pirate for Halloween - With Macaw

So, I want to dress as a Pirate for Halloween when I hand out treats to the kids. And, I want to have my Blue and Gold Macaw on my shoulder.

She is really a good bird and she has been around all the neighbor kids and they give her peanuts.

Does anyone think this might not be a good idea? She is clipped so, no fear of losing her. But maybe with the kids and commotion?

Also, I cannot find an eye patch!

I would go with not a good idea. She might know the kids, but they will all be dressed in costumes and some birds don't react well to that. Also just because a bird is clipped doesn't mean they can't fly off in the right circumstances.

I was at Halloween USA with the kids last week, not only did they have eye patches, but they also had a bird to sit on your shoulder.

Last year I was a pirate for Halloween. My meyer was too upset with all the comotion, I knew he would have a heart attack with scarey children everywhere. So I got dressed up, then a friend took pics with him on the shoulder. But he just wanted to destroy and my sparkly dangly things around my neck. And the beads in my hair. And the temporary pirate flag tattoo on my neck.

I was a pirate last year... I bought a fake, stuffed bird to put on my shoulder and left the real birds at home.

Just because she's clipped does not mean that there's no chance of losing her. Any bird, plus an open door (or the great outdoors), combined with excitement, could easily add up to an escaped bird (clipped or not).

Not sure if you are intending on going out or just greeting trick or treaters, but either way I'd make extra, double sure that my birds are safely locked up in their cages all night that night.

I would also just use a stuffed parrot. Plus, you dont really want to be drawing all that attention to yourself and your parrot, could stress your little one out.

I answered my door with Newt the past couple of years with the kids for Halloween.. Newt and the kids loved it. Newt learned to say Trick or Treat!

One little kid yelled back to his mom. "Hey Mom.. This lady has a real talking bird!.. LOL

What if they are on a harness? Would it still just be too much commotion?

I agree that a clip does not mean a bird will manage to fly away. A bit of wind can give quite a bit of lift. Halloween can be scary for birds in the half-dark - they can't see as well and sudden movements can spook them... So I would not be too tempted to take my girl around on that evening...

There's a reason pirates wear eye patches. You don't want that big beak next to your eyes if something spooks her. The best place for our pets during Halloween is safely indoors.
