Tip for storing fresh vegetables and fruit

I just wanted to make a note for everyone since most of regularly buy fresh vegetables and fruit for our birds. I used to have a hard time keeping greens like kale and spinach as well as other veggies fresh for more than a few days. I don't have many birds so a bunch of kale lasts for some time. I decided to try the Debbie Meyer green bags and boy do they work! I was skeptical at first but I decided to give them a shot. They work for all veggies and fruit and everything lasts more than three times longer in the fridge. Here are a couple examples:

Kale used to last six days tops, now it stays green and crisp for over three weeks

ripe strawberries keep for more than two and a half weeks

green grapes keep for almost three weeks

Peppers last for over two weeks and stay firm, even after they are cut

I was throwing away so much produce but now I get my monies worth when I shop. The only thing I don't recommend is storing bananas in the green bags. They stay yellow longer but they still tend to taste overripe inside. It might be alright for birds though, but I don't enjoy the taste. Everything else stores wonderfully. Just take any plastic or wrap off the veggies and dry them well first.

I bought the bags at Walmart for about $10. They are reusable as well. You may find a knock off brand at discount stores like Giant Tiger. They are cheaper and work just as well, I have both types.

I hope this info is helpful

Those bags are AWESOME....I need more.

We actually did keep our bananas in there, and I don't remember the tasting overripe, but I would still suggest them and try to keep up with the time...

Mainly if you're like us and completely forget you have bananas until it's too late!
And...that's because the keep fruit flies from showing up!

Great, I am glad I could help. I like it when I can give the advice instead of always asking my pesky questions

Awesome tip. Thats cool because I always wondered about those bags!! & I will buy them especially because of all the food I was throwing out - this will save a lot of money for sure, & my birds will be happy.

Awesome, thanks for sharing! My boyfriend constantly gripes about the spoilage and waste of fruits and veggies that I buy.
