Smile About those boings people make...

I see that a lot of you make your own boings. I just wanted to point out that they are awsome! They have inspired me to make one for KeeWee, my green Quaker. I was wondering if I could use copper wire for the wire used inside the rope? Is it harmful to birds, the copper? KeeWee apriciates your answers. the faster you tell me, the faster he can get a new toy!!!

I dont know if I would use copper - Im not 100% on if its dangerous or not, but I just worry that if it were ever chewed on it could be harmful. Im sure others will chime in - I love boings! Make sure you post pictures when youre done making one, I need to be inspired = )

Thanks! I wasn't sure if it would hurt him or not. You see, I was alos going to cover the rope in two layers of yarn. No way would he be able to get to the wire after it was. I know he wouldn't chew it either because he has two rope perches already.

Don't use copper. I have heard of copper poisoning in birds and it is a fairly soft metal that can be too easily chewed. Don't use brass either as it is a mix of copper and zinc. Stainless steel wire is safe. I don't know where to buy it, but you could ask at your local hardware store.

I would be VERY careful with the yarn. Birds love to chew, but even with just normal wear and tear, yarn can unravel/fray/get loose and present all sorts of opportunities for wrapping around toes and causing injury. And if the metal underneath it isn't bird-safe, it's very easy to chew around the yarn and get right at that metal.

It's a very pretty toy, but to be honest, I'd be very worried that it's not going to be safe.

I'd stretch it out a little, so he doesnt have to bend over to stand on it.
