Introduction, questions, advice, etc... Long Post

Hello everyone! My name is Chris and I have three awesome companions! I have a gorgeous girl named Jen whom I live with. Then I have a 9 month old Parakeet and Cockatiel named J.J. and Chaz!

There is a new exciting addition coming in the form of a Red Bellied Parrot. Her name isn't decided yet but we expect her arrival around November 14th!

I do have a few questions about these birds as well as my current birds.

My Parakeet J.J. is parent raised and isn't taking to me very well. She does not want to come out of the cage at all but she does not bite. She will come out on her own but only to fly around our (Computer and bird) room. Any suggestions?

My Cockatiel Chaz is hand fed is doing awesome. He flies to me when I open the cage. Flies to me throughout the house if I call to him. But he has somethings about him that I question. If he is on my shoulder, he is very tough to get onto my finger. He flies away, but only to fly back to my shoulder. If he is on my finger initially, he has no issues staying there for me to play and pet him. Then, he likes to sit on top of a cage that he uses as his little climbing toy. If I try to retrieve him from there (unless he flies when called) he flies around the room and won't come to me. It's almost as if he knows he is gonna go back into his cage.

He also hasn't really learned any whistling patterns or funny cute little quirks yet. Just wondering if these are signs that he is unhappy. He is talkative though. Loves chirping with the Parakeet. He does a lot less senseless yelling compared to a few months ago. Just want him to be as happy as he can be.

I'm also looking for very desireable treats for him and her. I buy them all treats from a website but I mean like fresh fruit and vegetables. I was wondering if anyone suggest some of the more desired treats for Cockatiels, Parakeets, and Red Bellied Parrots.

And bathing, the birds do not enter a bird bath at all. Inch of water in a shallow little container about 14" wide. I tried spraying them with a mist, but they both hate it. They just flap and fly away.

For the Parrot, is this a good cage for her? Parrot Bird Cage Cages w/Stand 24"x24"x62" - 0204AS - eBay (item 380086396866 end time Oct-27-09 02:56:14 PDT)

Also, does anyone suggest a nice playstand for them? I am looking to spend around $100 shipped for something of that nature. I will bend my budget a bit if the deal is worth it.

Lastly, any advice on taking in a new Red Bellied Parrot?

Hi and welcome a board! Both little birds sound like they may need work on stepping up. It will be difficult as they are not clipped, so they can fly away. Don't clip them though. Start by offering a yummy treat with your fingers. Do this repeatedly so the bird gets use to your hands being close and they can get close to you. If your bird steps up tell them good boy and put them back down. Don't put right in the cage or they will affilliate being picked up with going home. Then they won't want to step up again.
Red bellies are great birds! Congrats on acquiring your new baby. They can tend to be a little skittish at first so you need to give the baby time to get used to their new home. Let them make the decisions when they are ready to be touched or step up or come out of their cage.
The cage you picked is too small, IMHO. You need to get him a little wider at least. The bigger the better. Get the biggest cage you can afford. I would spend the cash on the cage and hold off on the playstand for a little.

Really? Bigger than 24x24? I was told 18x18 would work for a Red Bellied Parrot? I just threw it up here to make sure I was correct. Plus, most cages that big are much more expensive than $110. Anything bigger is closer to $300

You will be able to purchase a nice flight cage at a lesser price. Go at least 32x24x60.

The cage you posted is the same cage I have my cockatiel and my rats in, a bigger one would definitely be better for a red bellied. Once all the toys, perches, food, bird etc is put in, the cage can get a little crowded and a red bellied is going to want to be able to move around in there.

I am loving all your questions, sounds like you really want what's best for your birds! :)

Hello, welcome to the board!

Bah, stay away from ebay cages...the problem is half the time they don't even say what brand it is or what the cage is made from, and those are very important things.

I don't recognize thebrand of the cage you linked to...but here's the same thing: really good brand, slightly lower price, and theplace has free shipping too.

Bird Aviary Cage & Stand for 32"x21" Finch to Conure HQ 13221: WindyCityParrot.com, Bird Food, Parrot Food, Parrot Cages,Bird Cages, Aviaries, Bird Toys

I've ordered from windy city parrot's quite a few times now. They have a great points system that builds up to give you big discounts (especially when you're spending hundreds of dollars!) And their customer service is fantastic.

So you think this cage will work perfect for one (1) red bellied parrot?

Yes. Bigger is always better, but that one will work just fine.

Actually, Windcity is very useful because you can look for cages according to the actual species of the bird. In your defense, they DO come up with some 20-something inch (in width) cages, but that's probably an absolute minimum. They've come up with some 36 inches for macaws and I know that's SERIOUSLY small for a macaw. ^^

And yes, I did a species search. That cage will work really well for one red bellied, if you choose to get it. the best cage brands in general seem to be AE, HQ, and King....but make sure that you're not getting Carmen AE...I've heard a lot a lot of complaints about that division. AE from various distributors is usually good stuff.

But that HQ is pretty delicious. My only complaint is that I personally like dome tops because they give a little more room and aesthetically look better...but you're also going to tend to pay just a bit more for them.

Also, don't worry about them saying an electric screwdriver is preferred. You can throw these together easily with a traditional screw driver. I'm not the strongest girl in the world (though I am kind of freakishly strong for a girl o.0) and I have no problem putting them together.

Just beware, the instructions may be overly simple so take your time figuring what the crap they're talking about. ^^;
