New hybrid macaw coming to join us!!!

I listened to my answering machine today while my husband was out running errands and there was a call wanting to confirm the shipment of a bird tomorrow. I thought it must be a mistake. The number was from MN, where I grew up, which I thought was odd. I told my husband what happened and he got this odd look on his face. He said darn it and smiled and said he had a surprise. When we were in MN at my grandma's funeral a few months ago he ran into a bird breeder friend of my mom I always talked about. She had a gorgeous macaw who needed and home and he put a deposit on him or her for me!

He didn't tell me and the bird is coming tomorrow! He knew I was so sad after losing my grandma and how I always had wanted a macaw. He was going to make it my birthday and Christmas present! I am just so happy that my family will finally be complete. I had always wanted a macaw and I sit at the bird store and pet stores for hours playing with their macaws and dreaming of having one.

We go pick him/her up tomorrow morning! It was just weaned and is a harlequin mixed with a camelot, so he/she is a very hybrid macaw, but so pretty my husband said. He saw pictures of the baby and showed them to me just now. He, (I will call him he) is gorgeous! He looks like a harlequin to me with a little less orange, but you can see for yourself! I know this breeder well and she is just great with her birds, I would play with them all the time as a kid. She breeds only a few macaws a year and will not be breeding anymore, so I am very lucky to have one of her birds.

I am just SO surprised, my husband has always said no way, no more birds now. I can't believe he kept this a secret for 2 months! He said he was going to get one for me and this one seemed perfect. The baby is super sweet and the breeder says he lies on his back and plays and is eating well on his own. She did not sex him, but I probably will when he settles in. I am so happy I could cry. Anyway, without further ado, here is the new addition, no name yet! The breeder took these a few weeks ago:

What a stunner!! I'm sure you are well aware of cockatoo dust and the danger it poses to macaws and to keep them well away from each other. Your husband is really something huh?! What a wonderful surprise!

Have you got a name picked out? I think Salsa would be fitting, here is what I read on Wikipedia: The name "Salsa" is the Spanish word for sauce, connoting (in American Spanish) a spicy flavor.[2] Salsa also suggests a "mixture" of ingredients

Yes, we are very aware. My husband knows they are not the greatest combo of birds, but the breeder assured him that with proper caution it should be just fine. We will have the macaw upstairs and Paco is downstairs so that should be good. We also have an air purifier in Paco's room and we will now get one for the babies room too.

Oh, he was hatched May 26th so he is almost 5 months on the dot. I have so much research to do, I really did not think I would have another bird for a long time.

Salsa is really cute, it is hard to pick a neutral sex name. The name sure does fit perfectly. I think I will get him/her sexed just so I know for any future health issues.

I am thinking about quarantine now and trying to find the best plan for him. I can't keep him in our chinchilla room, the only room without central vents and a/c because it is too cold for him. I guess I will be closing off the vent in an upstairs room and using towels to close the bottom of the door off as well.

Emilly- My husband has always been romantic and sweet, but never quite like this. I thought something was up the past few days, he never leaves the room to talk on the phone and he did yesterday, but he told me it was his insurance claim adjuster! What a sneak! We are going to pick up the cage he ordered right now. I can't wait for tomorrow!

Really? In West Palm Beach? I just checked the forecast and I think s/he'd be fine! It's warmer there at night than it is in my house (or most homes around here).
