moths and web type things in bird food?

I know you can put the bird food in the freezer to kill the moths but is it okay to feed the food after with the bugs having been in there??

I had a super tight tied bag inside a closed drawer and they STILL got in there!!

There was a tiny maggot thing and also a few moths inside with their nest web stuff....

can I still feed it? I don't want to make the birds sick or anything.

Thanks!!!

I would not. I would start with a fresh bag and after freezing, keep in a sealed plastic container.

As long is it wasn't a zillion moths in there i think it's ok. I mean, we eat them all the time WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING!

To ease your mind a bit, they didn't get into the sealed bag...the eggs were in the seed when you bought it. I hate moths but unfortunately, somewhat of a way of life with birds.

Most of my birds eat mostly Paradise Blend, but some of my birds still eat some seed despite my best intentions, so I still buy it. I've found that the Volkman's Featherglow line is very clean and I haven't had any trouble at all with moths with that brand.

It doesn't hurt them but by the time you clean out all the critters, cocoons, feces and half chomped on seed, I wouldn't find it worth it very much. I have heard you can take the bag back with the critters and most places will give you a new one.

Are they Indian meal moths? I've heard that even if your bird eats them, they're a decent source of protein.
I probably wouldn't feed the seed mixture to Luen after eggs had hatched, knowing they were in there, however. I always freeze my bird seed before opening the bag :} And then keep the seed in the freezer in an air-tight container. Seeing as I tend to mix it in with his warm vege-mush it 'defrosts' the seeds then.

I hope not! Been keeping birds for a couple years now and I have yet to have any moth problem (knock on wood). I probably jinxed myself now

Now, fruit flies are a whole 'nother story

my 'other' hobby is baking so I always have lots of different types of flours, another favorite of these moths. I hate them. I freeze the bird food and use sealed containers for flour, those sticky moth traps help too. But I always end up with some by summer time. the larvae, yuck yuck..
