Macaw&CocatooRescue Of NM has a New Resident

I just want to say that this is an experience that my husband and I would not change for anything in the world.

Last night we went to pick-up Rainbow (the most satisfying 150 miles that we ever drove).

Because we knew that she was a bit bare we made sure that we took a blanket to put over the carrier.

Rainbow is a beautiful girl. When we first met her I am sure that she was a bit anxious and nervous. Once in the car we spoke to her for a bit (she is bilingual) and she said something that made me laugh so hard. From that point on she started laughing just like I did. I sang to her for a while and she seemed to calm down quite a bit. We put on some nice quite music and she must have fallen asleep cause she became very very quite.

When we arrived at our destination she was greeted with such love. She had a cage that was set up for her with toys and nice perches. Her feathered cousins called out to her and she actually called out to them. (It was about 10:00 p.m and there was a lot of calling going on!)

Ms. J gave her some food, water and the biggest grape I have ever seen which she just gobbled up!

I think people do not realize what a commitment it is when one brings home one of these precious beings. It does not only affect the individual that is bringing the bird home, but those around them also. Some family members are not as receptive as one would hope. This is really a family decision, a family commitment. Rainbows owner admitted that he did not have enough time and knowledge to have taken up this responsibility. That is why it is so important to make sure that you know as much as you can when bringing an addition to your home.

Rainbow has a beautiful angelic face and such a lovely tail. We hated to leave her, but we knew that we did not have the experience needed to care for her. Our job was to get her to a safe place. I did spend some more time with her before we left and when I spoke to her she just looked at me and I could see in her eyes and in her demeanor that she was grateful. I told her that she was going to a wonderful place and that soon she would be the Macaw she was meant to be. I cried all the way home!

Thank you Anna for entrusting us with such precious cargo and thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience such a wonderful and indescribable feeling.

To us this is just the beginning of a wonderful adventure!

When we got home our babies were waiting for us. They do not understand time---they just know when Mom and Dad get home they get to play for a bit, sing, dance and be silly….so we did what any other good parront does. At 11:00 p.m. we were dancing, singing and playing! We all had a snack and then they were satisfied and went to bed happy! This morning, we as parronts had to get up, get their stuff ready and start our day. Our kids, well we are sure, will take several naps!!!!

We love our babies so very much and we are very very lucky to have such wonderful girls which remind us everyday how much they love us and how important we are in their lives!

There is no small way

Kali,

It was not in a small way -- when one helps in any form it is still called "helping".

It is nice to know that we all were touched by her and in one way or another are responsible for her well-being!

Thank you all for helping to save rainbow (that name has got to go.) She looked like an extra desperate soul and I just could not ignore her. I couldn't have done it without the support of all of you, even if you just provided encouragement. Asulli - I'm so sorry you ended up traveling so far. I don't think any of us could have guessed they lived so far out in the sticks! Jill is likely very tired today too as she is an early to bed person. I spent most of the day wiring money, arranging transport, giving and getting updates & raising funds so I stayed up all night trying to recoup time to prepare for our trip. I hope I can go to bed at a decent hour tonight because it is going to be a mighty early morning tomorrow. My team is all prepared to step in and take over the flock here. I am eager to meet rainbow tomorrow. She sounds like a character and has already proven her expert escape artist skills to foster mom and family. I am greatly pleased that this gal is safe with a bright future ahead of her. She did not have to fall victim to the mighty Craigslist. I am crossing my fingers that she is in good health, but have a feeling that she may need a little nursing before that is the case. Thanks again Asulli and everyone else who helped. Be careful - that rescue stuff can become pretty addictive. ;)
-Anna
