I'd be interested to know how many birds you have sold that ended up splitting open their chests when hitting the floor after such a severe clip, or broke off the tips of their beaks, or suffered another type of injury. The level of psychological damage must also be quite extensive.

There you go again N.G.O.T.B. trying to insult. Doesn't work on me. ... LOL.

Can we just keep the conversation on what is in the best interests of birds in general which is what these bird boards should be all about, rather than some of you trying to degrade this thread and expression of personal opinion into personal attacks. Looks to me like you are trying to turn this into a mudslinging contest. I won't play because I don't want to get banned.

as i mentioned before, this thread was aimed at australian cockatoo species, a genus i cant expect someone in Quebec to understand as our native fauna have evolved and hybridised to cope with completely unique conditions.
i think with sufficient research you will find that all my claims are true.

I do agree with greycloud no bird should anymore then 7 flight feathers cut on each wing. Two of my birds only have 1 wing clipped i will not cut the other wing till the other side has grown back. But Bailey my sun conure has both wings clipped, I only took 5 flight feathers on each wing off no more.

Listen N.G.O.T.B.,

You don't have to try and berate Franciscus, as he was making valid points and asking fair questions. His comment on psychological damage was spot on. One does not have to have many birds to know and/or experience what he says is absolutely true.

Psychological damage, due to taking flight away from a previously flighted parrot, does occur almost always if not always.

And btw, since you are the one who has chosen to throw out #'s, I personally have more yrs. experience than you and I currently keep way way more parrots/birds than you do. But with that said, we all still have much to learn in the keeping of these marvelous creatures.

FYI: I have taken in parrots that are/were clipped by previous keepers and who are now flighted because they wound up here. The ones that have yet to grow back their flights are so anxious to join their flighted buddies in the air having a good time rather than sitting on some perch that some uninformed or not-knowledgeable-enough human once stuck them on to manage them more easily = SAD in my opinion.

Dude I had a sulphur crested cockatoo and I live e in aust. NO WAY would I ever clip 10 flight feathers!!!

Cockatoo's and teils both have a great ability to fly even when clipped, but never ever would I ever clip that many flights.

Kali, thanks for that post. That was the only point I was trying to make. I am not here to judge anyone on their decision to clip or not clip. My birds are unclipped. In all my years of breeding birds and working with birds in a zoo atmosphere I have gathered much information from extremely experienced people, from avian behaviorist, breeders, avian vets, and no one has ever clipped 10 feathers on a birds wing, cockatoo or not! I have worked around birds for over 30 yrs and the only thing I can say is that the practice of clipping 10 feathers per wing is just cruel! I don't care how many birds you own. I have owned up to 75 birds when I was breeding. I would like to see written proof that this is the correct way a bird should be clipped.
On another note, people with medical issues should not be discriminated against when owning birds. Birds bring great joy to many people, ill and handicapped. I am positve that those birds get the same joy from their owners.

Ok, guys - I'm not anti- "wing clipping discussion" even though we have plenty of threads that discuss both the "pro v. con" angles and the "how to's". But this thread is way off track with the personal and ad hominem attacks.

I'm closing this thread. If you want to continue this discussion civilly then I suggest you start over and play nice.
