Interested in finding a rescue in my area that needs volunteers.

Hi there, I live just outside of Baltimore, MD and have been tossing around the idea of doing some volunteer work. I have looked online for a local rescue, but am having trouble finding one nearby. There is a rescue called Wilson Parrot Foundation which looks lovely, but they are nearly 1 hour from me. If anyone can recommend a rescue, please let me know, I would like to get out of the house more, and it would be ideal if I could benefit the poor birds as well.

Also, does anyone do volunteer work? Are there dangers to your birds at home? I would not want to bring any diseases home to Henry. I assume that precautions should be taken, shower as soon as you come home etc.

At PA line is a great sanctuary/rescue called Lair of Dragons bird rescue. Go on petfinder and type Maryland, they have rescues in this area.

Yes, there are dangers involved. There are dangers invloved anytime you are around other birds. That includes, pet stores, shows, and club meetings.
The majority of santuaries know what they are doing and birds are tested upon entering the facility. There are some that havent a clue and shouldnt be doing what they are.

PDD,Beak & Feather, and Polyoma-( some species never outgrow the risk of Polyoma, while others do) are deadly with no cure. This can be transmitted on Feather dust and or droppings.

If you are willing to volunteer your time(and I wish we saw more people doing this) you just need to practice Bio-Security when coming home.

Biosecurity for Wild Birds, Pet Birds and Poultry, Avian Influenza, Exotic Newcastle Disease - Animal and Plant Inspection Service

WHat would be a good way to disinfect clothing? SHoes I could spray with a dilute bleach solution, and leave outside to dry, but what about the rest? I always feel like the washer doesn't really disinfect, it only washes the dirt off.
