types of veggies!

Hey everyone,
Is there a list of fruits and veggies that are considered "bad" for birds?

I have a 3 year old caique in case you were wondering

Avacado, really (chocolate caffeine and alcohol- but those aren't veggies and fruits- I just wish they were ).

I also avoid too many dreied sweet fruits, like papaya, raisains or cranberries.

Chacolate

Avocados I have heard stories of birds eating it and being fine but why chance it.?

Alcohol

Pits of fruits and seeds(of say apples oranges etc....)

Onions onions have been proven to damage blood cells in animals it has not been tested on bird blood but i dont feed it anyway

Caffeine

Milks products: birds are lactose intolerant they can only process very very small amounts of lactose. I have heard people say that eggs have lactose which is NOT true. Cheese has some but it has been processed and only has small amounts of it. so it can be giivin to birds in small amounts.

I'm sure there are a few i am forgetting. but hope this helps!

Here, this may help a little! Maybe not quite what your looking for, but it'll have to do!

Toxic Foods
Diet: Safe & Toxic Foods
Foods & Plants Toxic to Birds
Non-toxic for birds list and a list of thngs that are toxic for birds.

There's also the fact that if you buy foods, they could potentially have pesticides... thus a good idea to wash/rinse fresh foods very well before feeding!

To be extra safe, peel AND core fruits. Peels contain pesticides and should be disinfected with either Avicine or Citricidal. Certain fruits and vegetables have seeds that are toxic to parrots. Sometimes products can be found on organic produce.

Going along with all that, I have heard that since strawberries have such thin skin that they ought not to be given at least not in large amounts... that's what I have read though, due to the pesticides. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong...

how about organic strawberries?
Also, based on the list... I've heard of people feed their birds (or at least caiques) tomatos (the little grape sized ones). Do you know what's in it that's toxic?

I'm glad I didn't feed Bindi any (almost did but ended up feeding seedless grapes which she loves!)

I would think organic would be better, but there are organic pesticides as well so they would still have to be washed very VERY well...

I have read that you have to be careful with strawberries as well but my birds hate fruit so I haven't had to worry about it much. Organic would definitely be better. I have no idea about the tomato but I'm curious since there are people on here who feed their birds spaghetti with sauce.

Well, after reading on the net and finding this link Poisonous Plants for Birds tomatoes are safe for birds as long as they are ripe. It's the stems, leaves and sprouts that are toxic.

I was getting worried about the tomato thing- I feed my lorikeet tomatoes quite alot. Spaghetti sauce wouldn't be good for birds as it contains preservatives, onions etc. Unless it's homemade and you know what's in it. Ashling loves spag sauce... and spag :D
