I get my sprouting seeds from the bulk bins at the local whole-foods grocery. There are lots of different sproutable grains there, and you can sprout ordinary bird seed too. For a sprouter, I use a mason jar with a piece of plastic canvas mesh in the lid:

I get all my sprout seed and sprouter equipment from SproutPeople. They have a starter kit that works very well and comes with the Easy Sprout Sprouter and your choice of a two pound bag of seed. Here’s a link to their Bird Basics Sprout Kit.
Here’s a link to a post I wrote and images showing my first sprout attempts. Now I find it’s simple, quick and I’ve yet to experience a problem other than during the mid-winter it took a day longer for the sprouts to grow to the point where I would refrigerate them. I’ve also observed that Pepper has realized how good sprouts are and when they are offered it’s one of the first foods he’ll choose to eat from the choices in his food bowl.
Good luck in your sprouting attempts.
