Question Sugar

Hello. What actually happens to a fid who is given excessive sugar? Today I made instant oats with flax for myself and knowing my tiel likes warm foods I offered her a taste, well, she loved it. It was rather high in natural cane sugar tho. Is there anything specific about sugar in the diet that would be good for me to know?

The only thing I know is that you aren't supposed to give them a lot. But at the same time, there is sugar in whole wheat bread so I don't know. I think it is refined sugar that is the main problem cuz I know they sell sugar cane as treats for parrots so if it is natural cane sugar then it shouldn't be too bad. Zeke gets little treats of cookie every so often, Sophie loves blueberry bagels and all my birds get wheat bread so I think moderation is the key. One thing you can try (if you don't already) is making oatmeal with a little baby applesauce and cinnamon. My birds love it but I have to admit, I don't make it as much as I could.

Man I always wonder about the sugar thing as well. All the books say no sugar, but what about the honey sticks, they are made with mostly sugars to hold them together. It is so confusing... Wawa loves to steal sips of his dad juice all the time and we have been freaked out about the sugar content. He limits him to a couple sips out of each glass, but he will steal sips if you turn you head for a second! We always laugh because you can smell the juice on his beak... busted!
