Thumbs down Boo to Veggies

With all this salmonella talk, I honestly don't know if I can suggest giving our fids fresh vegetables anymore. It seems as though there is always a news coverage on another salmonella outbreak. And its not in just one food (like we all thought tomatoes) the FDA is still trying to find the cause of this outbreak. I am just trusting the seed diet for now. I just can't trust that my birds will not be infected.

I know what you mean...fresh vegetables worry me these days too.

Have you tried sprouting? I grow fresh sprouts for my birds and they absolutely LOVE them, and they're very nutritious. I got the Lil Bird Kit from The Coolest Sprouting Seeds on our Planet!.

Bird Sprout Kits

It comes with an EasySprout sprouter and 2 lb. of sprouting mix. You choose little, medium, or big depending on the size of your birds. 2/3 cup of seed made a huge mixing bowl full of sprouts! When they're done you can store them in the fridge for several days. It was so easy, and my birds are happy. :)

Although I do hear you on this one, It is possible to push the panic button on just about everything these days and then where would we be.
I still give my guys veggies and fruit but I do always try and buy organic. That is not to say that something can't go wrong there too but the chances really are minimal and I think the lack of veggies in their diet would be more troublesome.

On top of sprouting and buying organic I also shop at our local farmers market. Anything to protect my babies.

I understand and respect your concern, but the birds and I are still eating fruit and veggies. I realize that there are folks who have died from salmonella, but there are millions who have eaten fresh produce and been just fine. Heck, I can't win the lottery, what are the odds that I will get a bad tomato?

The recent problems with commercially farmed foods might encourage us all to do more growing of our own. Even city dwellers can enjoy gardening in containers It's empowering to know that you can provide some of these things for yourself (and your birds) and not be quite so dependent on systems that might breakdown or be unsafe.

My mother loves to garden so she grows a lot of my birds' feed. She agreed to switch to organic methods for my babies.

lets see now............. veggies have salmonella and e-coli, which is possible in both organic and non organic veggies. Seed diets cause fatty liver disease. Pellets cause supplement over dose. So its pizza and hotdogs for my fids!!!

Sorry. I've had that running threw my head for days now. I live in the heart of the ag belt of California. The Salinas valley, which is where the last scare came from with the packaged salads. None of it got here though. No bad tomatoes either. It sure is a valid concern. Another reason cleaning veggies is so important. Other then a small e-coli issue last year organic does seem the better way to go. I just have to block out the fact of what they use for fertilizer. lol

Believe it or not, my mother loves to play in the horse poop she uses. She thinks it smells good. She loves earth worms and respects spiders too. I must be adopted...lol.
