Question Avoid Peanuts??

Hi, Monica -- you have peanuts on the "don't" list but many bird foods have them in there. Why is it on the list to avoid?

Peanuts are not one of the healthier "nuts" out there and contain not only a lot of fat, but also may contain aflatoxins. In small amounts, peanuts may be fine, but it's also possible for birds to get Aspergillus flavus, or Asper for short... and it's not something that is easy to treat.

Read the article below...

Surely, a lot of parrots *DO* eat peanuts without issues, but there are also healthier alternatives.

It's probably due to the fact that certain veggies and fruits supposedly have high concentrations of pesticides...

WHFoods: Strawberries

Otherwise, I haven't a clue, since strawberries can be pretty healthy!

Looks like Monica was right about the pesticides - according to the Wikipedia article on lovebirds:

Quote:
Peach-faced Lovebirds require a variety of foods, including vegetables, seeds, and fruits; nevertheless, some human foods are unsuitable or poisonous for them, including dairy products, chocolate, cheese, avocado, rhubarb, and strawberries (which contain trace amounts of carcinogenic pesticides).
Good to know it's not the strawberries themselves. :)

I asked about this awhile ago and it seems to be one of those foods that are ok in small quantities.

Thanks Jim, guess I won't feed them steamed but soft boiled occasionally.
