Star Fruit (Carambola)

Hi everyone,

My mom has a beautiful star fruit tree that is bearing well! I offer the fruit to my birds and they love it but was wondering if the flowers were edible? Does anyone know if Star Fruit flowers are safe for birds?

I tried looking it up but I could not find a website that mentioned the blooms of the fruit.

I would assume they are safe but will not offer it until I am sure.

Thanks..
Sitara

Star fruit should be fine to offer. My birds didn't care much for it and I don't think it has much flavor but your birds might enjoy it.

I have fed star fruit to my birds, and have tasted it myself - not much flavor, but then it wasn't home grown, and that might make a big difference, picked when ripe and flavorful. I don't know about the flowers, but my method is "when in doubt, don't".

Thanks for the responses.
Mine are very flavorful and sweet/tangy. I will hold off on the flowers then until I am sure whether they are safe or not.

Just came across this. Didn't know star fruit was on the list, but it *should* be safe in small quantities. (I'm assuming) Fed in large quantities, it could potentially be harmful.

Thanks Monica. That is very good to know. My Ekkie loves star fruit.

All those little details about food that can just slip by......
