sprouting, a how to

Just a short video I put together trying to show how to use the easy sprout. Which can be any container that works of course.

YouTube - sprouting

the morning after soaking looks like this. Everything is swelled up from soaking.

this is the second morning. Note how tails are already shooting out of some of the beans.
When all is said and done, the tails will not be of uniform length. Some will be quite long, others seeming to only just start.

The third morning. Today the sprouts are ready.

Remember that 3/4 cup of grains and beans I started with? This is how it looks now. Three days after the process started.

once I spread the sprouts out in the bowl I store them in, I put the mash on top and put it in the frig. In the morning I will mix it all up. As the mash has a little liquid I let it drain on top of the sprouts. They seem to soak it up as there is no loose liquid left when I feed it. This is about a weeks worth for my three birds.

That is really helpful, thank you! I can now try this, even though my bird hates the sprouts I have boughten and tried he may like these, if I find the right beans.

Hey Jim, what a good idea to produce some pic of the sprouting proces. I feed my birds the sprouts with out squashing them, and simply mix them with mixed vege before serving. I also start feeding after day three and let them grow (the ones not served that is!) on till about day five or till used up. I use three sprouting jars at once at different stages.

I've never had any success with sprouting so thank you! I've saved your video to my favourites and will give it another try!

I don't know if the easy sprouter is available in the UK, and I know people like them. But, you can grow sprouts very easily just using a strainer. I soak the grains or legumes overnight (I do them separately since the legumes must sprout to longer tails than the grains - the grains are ready sooner), then in the morning pour them out into a strainer, rinse well, and set the strainer over a cup or small bowl to catch water drips. Just rinse a few times a day until ready. Usually the grains will be ready the following morning as soon as you can see the little white roots just emerging. At that point, let them drain well (not completely dry or dripping wet), then they'll store in a covered container, refrigerated, for several days. The legumes like Jim has shown in his useful photos take about another two days after the soak and rinse.

Hi Jim, I always enjoy your tips and recipes for breads etc: I guess I have a very fussy spoiled group of Ringnecks which are thriving on the favourites which are in abundance of their habitat. They finally have accepted eating beets and I dice up a fresh red beet every weekend for them, they are nuts about all foods, enjoy chickpeas a lot, and in the next week or so it is Pecan picking time for me. If I can collect 10 kilos like last year off the ground from trees along the roads near here I will be set until March or April when corn will begin to grow again. Hoping all is well at your end, friend.
