OMG, right birdie bread! Best idea ever! If you are having problems getting her to eat veggies you can bake it in a birdie bread, I made a post about birdie bread that's in the forum and someone linked a great base to start with that wasn't too high in sugar-i'm super excited about making it this weekend. You can buy a bag of different frozen veggies or you can buy fresh and plop them in! You can add a bit of seed, whatever you want! You can smush up sweet tato and put it in it's an awesome way to get birds to eat veggies! Oh yea and you can chop it up into the right size and freeze it!

Mebbe try to introduce brocolli or carrots next?

I think Birdie bread is a really good idea - I'll bake it FULL of veggies! LOL!

Is there a recipe that is completely from scratch? Is it easy?

I like the idea because it probably freezes really good. I can make little muffins, freeze them, and then take one out every few days!

I'd heard that sweet potatoes are actually more nutritious when cooked. I've been following the Shauna's mash diet, so mix different grains and legumes with steamed sweet potatoes and then freeze it in cubes to thaw for later use. My birds love the sweet potato, so I can mince up just about any kind of veggie to add to the mix as well and it will be eaten. They do get fresh veggies too, but an 'all in one' sort of mix makes it easy on rushed days.

I've used steamed, mashed carrots or winter squash in place of the sweet potato, and that went over just as well.

they're better cooked? I do have a steamer, but I assumed they were better raw. hmm, I'll try steaming them, then, sometime! I know they get pretty mushy any other way you cook them, do they get mushy steamed? Cookie has a thing for not liking mushy. lol

Oh Emmilyy it's SO easy! Kristy29 suggested using Cornbread & Muffin Mix | | Hodgson Mill as a base. You basically just follow the directions on the box and add what you want. Sometimes if you are doing things-like alot of smushy sweet potato or juicy fruit stuff you can hold back a bit on the liquids you add. Alot of people use jiffy cornbread mix as the base but I think that kinda has alot of sugar. It's so easy though-and the birds don't care how fluffy or not fuffy it turns out. There are lots of other recipes for birdie bread too if you want more of an idea of what others do:

From Land of Vos:
Land of Vos - Carolyn's Recipes

So if you don't use a pre made base like the Hogdson mills or jiffy-you can make your own with corn meal, baking powder and all that.

Another random one:

Birds N Ways:
BirdsnWays - Parrots & Exotic Pet Birds - Recipe Xchange

I have never made it totally from scratch, in the past I have used jiffy but I'm going to use this new mix now because I want it to become a regular part of the diet. Maybe one day I'll feel adventerous and try to make my own batter too... we'll see ;)

thank you!!! my sister is the cook, so I'll be getting her to make it, LOL! I'll help. maybe i'll chop a veggie. lol!

I'll make a list of what i need and next time my mom goes to the grocery store, I'll ask her to get the stuff for me!

Its okay to be a regular in the diet, right? like, some every day?>

Yep as long as it's not a huge chunk of bread that makes up the majority of what they eat it should be fine to offer every day :) you just want to be careful with how much sugar is in the mix you use, use the least amount you can find or make your own base.

Maybe carrots? Abbey likes the uncut ones. She wont touch the precut baby carrots. Pumpkin might work also.

CongoBongo that wouldn't fly in my house. Abbey eats every meal with me. She gets her share then I eat mine. Abbey gets her breakfast bowl of fresh stuff before I make my breakfast. She usually gets her fruits when I eat mine. I try to eat at least 3 fruits a day. So I take a bit then let her eat some..lol
