Millet Mac and Cheese

Okay, first off, I must tell you I just got this recipe right from the Healthy Bird Cookbook that Kaytee had posted on their website, but Stoli loves it. I would say it's good for small to medium size birds.

Ingredients:

* 1 box any brand macaroni and cheese
* 1/2 cup Kaytee pellets
* 1/4 cup grated carrots
* 1/4 cup chopped broccoli
* 1/2 cup millet

Directions:
Make the macaroni and cheese according to the instructions on the box. Add in the pellets and the grated carrots. Sprinkle the millet on top, lightly pushing it into the macaroni with the back of a spoon. (My tiels loved the millet and started eating that, but because it was pushed into the macaroni and cheese, they ended up having to eat some of that as well. Now these same tiels will eat anything that I give them.) Putting millet in this dish will entice even the pickiest of birds.

I have all those ingredients so Im going to make it today for them. Did you add the cheese to the macaroni? I wouldn't think that would be too good for them but I could be wrong. Not sure!

Might be better to use Whole Grain noodles and good ol' cheddar cheese (real cheeses are okay for parrots in small amounts)...

I'm thinking prepackaged contains a high SALT content and dairy (added milk & butter -- lactose).... all not good.

Do your fids like birdie bread?

I think it's main purpose is to help train your bird to try new foods. I wouldn't feed it to them on a regular basis, but I followed the directions and Stoli is doing great!

Hey, MacNCheese can't be worse than some of the things my fids have stolen off MY plate, right :) I just thought it important to be in the thread, that it's not best practice... newbies might get confused.... everyone's (and every birds) idea of a 'little' is different.

I haven't tried birdie bread either... but I think the ingredients sound yummy: jiffy corn muffin mix (or cornmeal & baking powder), an egg (with shell), lots of vegi's blended up, some applesauce or juice, seed, pellets, etc...
I just can't remember to BUY cornmeal, lol!

My birds love, love birdie bread. Don't buy Jiffy, it has alot of sugar. Buy an organic brand or plan cornmeal and add all the goodies.

Thanks greycloud, I knew I had read Jiffy in recipies, but I hadn't looked at the box myself yet... :) Regular Cornmeal it is!

The recipe sounds good but I don't feed Abbey anything that has milk directly in it. She can have cheese in small amounts and yogurt sometimes but I might make it for her with tomato sauce instead of cheese.

Do you smash up the shell? Isn't that a bit canabilistic? I'm learning so much new stuff :) I've not fed my lil guy cheese, but I heard it's not too good for them...what do you consider "real" cheese? Obviously not what comes in the mac-n-cheese box, but what kind would work?
