Palm oil for cockatiels?

I'm doing one of my favourite things; internet window shopping for cockatiel items I see on sale some palm oil, and since I've seen it constantly mentioned for the bigger birds such as 'toos and Greys, I click on it to see what it is

Now the 'size recommendation' the site gives (this is a 4 point sale indicating if an item is recommended for a bird of a specific size, i.e. if a toy would be okay for a budgie. If it has the number 4, for Macaws and Large Cockatoos, next to it, chances are it is not right for the li'le blue one) says that it would be okay for cockatiels

Is giving palm oil to cockatiels recommended? How much should be given? Is it a rare treat or a very very small dose for nutricional purposes?

I love internet window shopping, I stuff my cart full and then cry at the amount, LOL... As for the palm oil, I don't know, I've never even heard of giving oil of any kind to birds.

Doesn't palm oil destroy orang-utan's habitats?

I wouldn't give red palm oil to a 'Tiel - it's high fat, and there are better forms of good fat to provide than the partially saturated red palm oil. RPO does NOT provide the necessary Omega 3 fatty acids - flaxseeds do. About 1/8 tsp. per day if your bird cracks and eats the flaxseeds as he probably will. Of course your bird does need some fresh vegetables daily to provide beta-carotene - a low fat source compared to RPO.

Flaxseeds? Should I get a specific kind? I should be able to get a pack of flaxseeds out of the health food store (I'm pretty sure that the new Vitakraft Australian seed mix has flaxseeds in it)

Thanks for the info, I thought I'd check here first. My 'tiels do get their veggies every day

KGWatkins: I know, but we can look at the shopping cart and dream, can't we :3
