egg bound budgie

This all started last nite at 10pm,putting all to bed and noticed one budgie with poo on her vent, took her out,wet down her vent area and could feel an egg,I was nervous but she was acting well, put her in my hosp cage with heat and steam, mineral oil to her vent area.got up to check on her a few times she was still ok,called reg vet in AM,she wouldn't be in till 1:30,called avian vet he couldn't see her till 1:30 and he was 40 min away, she was still doing well, 30 min later she is basically collapsed! I could see this egg since early am and was hoping she could pass it,called reg vet,not in, no emergencyappts, called avaian and told him what was going on,I truly felt she would die if I did nothing so I asked how i could remove this egg,as a nurse I do have some medical stuff at home,so he told me what I could attempt to do.OMG she is so tiny this had to be the most difficult thing but I GOT it OUT! intact!! she laid still while I did it! as soon as it was out she stood up and then bit me,pray that she does well and recovers, she looks tired but I think she'll be ok

very good!
I'm glad it worked out.
Mineral Oil works wonders for that....
I had to do that to an egg bound tiel once.....

Hi, can you give me details on how you went about removing the egg? Thanks, Cindi.

P.S. I'm an RN, too.

Well I towelled her although she was so weak, layed her on her side took an 18gauge needle, slowley bored a hole, into the egg,my needle wouldn't fit my syringe I only had tiny tb syringe and a 5 cc so I had to make the hole large enough to put the tb syringe into the egg and aspirated the contents slowly,as the egg emptied I felt it get slightly smaller ,I used cotten sponge to hold the egg poured more mineral oil pushed gently and out it popped! nerve racking but I truly felt that if I had waited she would die.

wow, that sounds like a procedure i'd walk away with a heart attack from.... kudos to you for sticking with it... great job!

closest i came to something like that was when i had to pull a marble out of my fish's mouth using pliers - an experience i rather not repeat
