Opinions please

What tests should a new group of macaws get that were purchased at auction?

My breeders tell me Pacheco's and Chlamydia are sufficient along with a 45 day quarantine.

Opinions please!

Thanks.

Welll....

I only have small birds and always do psittacosis just because it is transferable to humans. I just adoped a lovebird that had been found outside and the vet also did Polyoma and PBFD as well as yeast and fecal testing.

What does your vet recommend?

Nebraska does not have an Avian vet, so much of what I do, I do. I am in a remedial medical profession already, and I read. I have access to several vets, but they are like talking to bumps on a log sometimes. I do my own blood-work and send it to Avian Bio Tech. I had a 12 year vet tech with a Masters in Veterinary science working for me for five years. She is now teaching students to be Veterinarians in a major University.

........................and the whole sum of what this woman knew about avian medicine could fill a thimble and have the space left over for a cup of sugar. Dogs & cats, she knew her stuff. Birds? She knew they had feathers, that is about it. This woman is the equivalent of a veterinarian with her emphasis going in another direction, teaching Veterinary sciences. My relationship with her and other vets has taught me to do as much of what I can by myself.

I am not much keener on people doctors. If you have a trauma accident, by all means get your broken leg placed in a cast. Do what the good doctor says. If however, you find a lump in your breast, and Oncologist visit will almost certainly mean the loss of your hair and your health. Some doctors should be shot with the lawyers. lol

Send a message via Yahoo to birdsnreps
in addition to pbfd, polyoma, chlamydia and psittacosis, we have an oral swab done, a fecal sample taken, and a cbc done. all of these tests you can just do yourself and send them in to avian biotech. just go on their website and they will send you all the supplies needed for free :)

I gave you my thoughts last time! Whatever tests are available should be given, especially those coming from extreme conditions (auctions!)
